New 1887 problem

Post by longhair1957 »

I just went out and bought a 1887 IAC and I got a problem already.
When I load up the magazine the shell stop will hold them in until I try to cycle the first time, then they all try to come back at once. I push them back in but they just keep coming! I am of course NOT pleased!

I am loading the "recommended" new "AA's" in it.
Not short stroking.

HELP!

I already just had him on the phone and he suggests contacting IAC and possibly sending it back.

Well, Steve was my one and only idea. I know nothing about the 1887 shotguns mechanically.

Since it don't work, I guess I'd send it back.

longhair,
Please take my advise just this one time. Put the gun back in it's box, or in your safe, and walk away from it. Let your anger dissipate before you touch it again. Tomorrow is Monday, call IAC and make arrangements to send it back.
If you chop shop it you will only hurt yourself in the long run.

Been there, done that, still feel like an idiot.

Seriously, just walk away from it till you calm down.

Uh, Joe, look at the calender again.

Longhair, follow Joe's advice even if he is a day ahead of himself.

Call Steve back and ask if he knows Coyote Cap's contact info, he's the expert on those things.

Longhair, Your best bet is to contact Coyote Cap. He was the driving force that got the 87's back on the market and was directly involved with the start up of the factory in China. He's come out of retirerment and knows more about the IAC 87's than anyone else (the load two in'em is his design) Here is a link to his web site. COG

Thanks all!
Steve I forgot to say that after I got off the phone with you I called Marty over at IAC and he gave me the number for who does his warrenty work and told me to send it over...

But I just couldnt wait so in those hours I oiled and played with the loose screws.... when they were loose it funtioned... tight it screwed up as a matter of fact when the carrier screws were tight you almost couldnt even open the action....so I kept playing with those... kinda messing with the syptoms and not the problem!

Finally I pulled it all apart after downloading a dissassembly manual.

And it was of course cruddy as hell and surprise! where one of the carrier screws came through the frame on the inside surrounding area it was incrusted with some hard stuff about .010 thick. I scrapped it of cleaned and lubed and greased everything and it might just be working right... but the wife just called me to dinner... I'll let you know after that how it went!

Longhair, I forgot to address your question. The long ejector, that long pease in the middle of the carrier is what holds the shells in the mag tube. Check and make sure that it moves (pivots up and down) when you work the action.

p.s. Just read your lattest post. That is one of the problems that Coyote Cap list on his web site. Click on, "Gunsmithing Tip" on the left side of his home page and that will take you to a list of 38 problems that he has found on IAC guns and the way to correct that problem

Well, I give up! after all the cleaning and everything it usually will feed a magazine full without a hitch... but I saw one of the many problems on Coyote Cap's list of 38 (wish I saw the list first I wouldnt of never bought one). The thing that I saw was problem of last round ejection, mine was doing fine ejecting loaded rounds...but lets just check for sure. So I took a shell and carefully emptied it, got it to where it will feed fine up the carreier into the chamber, and low and behold, it is stuck to the bolt face, held in tight by right and left extractors. So next I loaded a live into the mag and the empty into the barrel to see if it was just last round or what.... NOPE it still was stuck and cause a big ol' jam.

But so far all I have really done is clean the gun no real modifications to speak of however this looked like I would have to modify...thereby I might void the warrenty.... SO DAMNITALL I guess that I will have to send it in and when it comes back I may just sell it!

longhair,
send the gun back and get a refund. this will lower your blood pressure. and make you happy.
i bought a coyote stuff 1887. this was the biggest piece of stuff i ever saw. sent it back and it was returned as ok. never worked. i sent it back ;and request ;my money back. they sent me the refund.
get another gun if you want. i have seen many of these in cas and talked to many owners. these guns either work or they don't. if you like it and want to keep one. keep exchanging till you get one that works. some will and most won't. just my 2 cents worth. hope it helps.

I have two IAC 87, The first one is an early 06 prefix gun I got while waiting for my Coyote Cap Special, the second is said special. The 87's have been my main match shotgun for over a year and a half and have served me well. But there is a steep learning curve you have to deal with before you get good with it. It takes a lot of practice to get the load two down pat and you have to work the lever hard and fast for the best results. Now I'm faster than probably 85-90% of the 97 user and have won matches using it. I'm sure that someday some young gun is going to show every one just how fast they can be.

I must have gotten one of the better ones. Put about 200 rounds through it with a few problems, but nothing to force an end to the day.
I thoght it was my fault is was jamming, maybe not. Played around with it a couple different times and some days are better than others for it. I'll keep trying and hope it smooths out a bit. It is very easy to short stroke the gun and then it will jam. Good Luck.

1887 was returned to Legendary Guns, great manager, traded for a sweet little side by side coach gun... I will post pics later!

I could have traded for another 87 but my mouth was soured and I just didnt want to trust another.

Longhair,

I used to go to Legendary Guns Of The West a lot when I lived in Phx.

Was the manager a big guy with a mustache? If so I know him.
