Now I made a knife .....

In 1980, my Uncle Jerry (who was a Professional Hunter) asked me if I wanted to make a knife with him. He had a Herter's catalog and the knife he liked was out of stock. It was called the "Herters Canadian Belt Knife". He traced the photo larger and larger until we had a template. Then we ground, cut, filed, tempered and hardened. Some more cutting and filing and the handles were made. When we finished, he gave me that one and he made another for himself. Later, he made me a leather sheath for it. It is the top knife in the photo, the one with the wood handles. It has been my favorite and most used knife for many years. Ricky recently put an edge on it that could shave a peach. Wanting another, I had a raw piece of knife steel that I accumulated. There was a leftover piece of buffalo horn powder measure from our auction so I sent my money and the plan was set. I copied the blade and made the tang odd shaped and stepped with some oval holes in it to fit in the horn. I filled the horn with expanding-hardening epoxy and set the tang in it. It came out pretty good and it very comfortable. Levergun Leatherworks made the black case (pictured) for me and he did an awesome job!

OH MY !!! I HAVE LOVED THIS KNIFE FORM SINCE I FIRST SAW IT IN THE HERTER CATALOG OH SO MANY YEARS AGO. I DID NOT REALIZE AT THE TIME IT WAS A KNOCKOFF OF THE RUSSELL CANADIAN BELT KNIFE.
SO IN THE BY'N'BY I BOUGHT THE HERTERS VERSION AND IT IS IN MY SURVIVAL KIT IN MY PICKUP TO THE VERY MOMENT I WRITE THIS.
SINCE THEN I HAVE BOUGHT A FLATGROUND RUSSELL CANADIAN BELT KNIFE, AND THEIR LITTLE VERSION OF IT TOO. AS A BACHELOR I USED IT IN THE KITCHEN FOR MANY YEARS. AFTER GETTING RE-MARRIED MY NEW BRIDE WAS ASTOUNDED AT THE FINE KNIVES I HAD FOR HER TO USE IN THE KITCHEN. SHE OF COURSE ENDED UP BEATING THE LIVING SHIQ OUTTA THEM....[ WHAT IS IT WITH WIMMEN AND KNIVES...?? ] AS SOON AS I SAW THE NEW COLD STEEL VERSION OF THE CANADIAN BELT KNIFE FOR $12.00 I BOUGHT ONE OF THOSE FOR THE KITCHEN AND RECLAIMED MY ORIGINAL RUSSELL KNIFE WITH IT'S EDGE ALL BEAT TO HELL AND GONE. IT TOOK ME FOREVER TO GET IT BACK IN FORM AS A PREMIER CUTTING INSTRUMENT.
I ALSO HAVE THE LAST CUSTOM KNIFE MY PAL DAVE WAYLAND [ WAYLAND PRECISION WOOD STOCKS... ] EVER MADE, AN UP-SCALED 5" VERSION OF THE CANADIAN BELT KNIFE OUT OF ATS34 WITH REAL STAG SCALES. I CARRIED IT AT HIS MEMORIAL SERVICE IN MY RIGHT HAND WITH MY OLD TLA SS6 44SPL IN MY LEFT HAND TO DO THE SALUTE TO DAVE....OH BOY DID THIS BRING BACK EMOTIONAL MEMORIES....I MISS HIM SO MUCH AND HIS HIGHLY IRREVERENT PHONE CALLS EVERY OTHER SUNDAY MORNING FOR YEARS.

The Canadian Belt Knife "semi ulu" blade is one of the most useful game knives I've ever used.

This is all I use for Dismembering, Skinning & Butchering...

If you're looking for knife-making steel, you might try using old files as they can be had for cheap from businesses that use up lots of them..

Yep the design is of a Russell Skinning Knife from Canada, they won an award back in the 60's for the design, have had an original Russell since about 1969 and still have it.

Sir, I'm thinking (uhoh) that a 12 buck ColdSteel is a knockoff and prolly not worth a pinch of "stuff" I have a couple of ColdSteel folders (a Ti-Lite, and a 4" Voyager) both 60$$ plus and very good quality.

I looked it up on the cold steel website, it's the real deal, think I will buy one as my friend The Hairy Eye Ball, broke my original one we we were young.

Can't tell you what it cost since I got it in a PIF deal...
