45/70 PH gun

Ok - I bought the mag and read the article. I like Sam's attitude - if it works, do it!
And the .45-70 obviously worked.

It is interesting that when reading other shooting and hunting forums, there seems to be a lot of folks that are not willing to admit that the .45-70 (or other lever action rifles) can be used effectively in Africa, even as a client rifle and not a PH rifle.
For some reason, they choose to ignore the laws of physics and statistics. Oh well, that is just their loss.

Yeah, I thought the writer sounds very practical and able to observe what the 45/70 actually does, rather than getting worked up about something without trying it out.

Actually he sounds like a lot of the guys on this forum. He's checked out lots of other's experiences and filtered for the good information without falling into the 'better than thou' attitude that I see in so many magazine articles.

That guy enlarged upon the available information in a way that helps all of us. So, good job I say...

Thanks for the head's up. Sam Fadala has always been a good writer of "on the ground" practical gun use. His book on "Winchester's 30-30" is full of good ground proven information. He lacks the flair of some and most of his stuff reads like a text book, but if you want information he's pretty good.

Grizz, I'm currently saving my spare change for the Marlin's Ultimate Guide Gun. It is my hope that by the time I've saved enough it will be available in 444 Marlin. If not, I'll settle for the 45/70 Govt. I don't think there's a lot of practical difference between the two cartridges, and since I'm tooled and ammoed up for the 444 I'd just as soon stick with it. Both bust rocks like a bulldozer and I doubt any black bear will know the difference. As far as Alaska and its big bears are concerned, I've pretty much resigned to the fact that the Lord will return before I ever get a chance to hunt that land or defend myself against the greatest predator walking the planet.
