.30 Remington?
Picked up a nice Remington 141 today (will post pictures later) it's a .30 Remington. Now for some dies and cases. Anybody happen to have some lying around? Thanks.

I loaded some for a friend at church in my 30-30 dies, same load.

Re: .30 Remington?
Not a good idea, even though using .30-30 dies has been suggested/recommended for years. The cartridges are VERY similar, and data is interchangeable, but there are differences between the cartridges other than the fact one is rimless.JerryB wrote:I loaded some for a friend at church in my 30-30 dies, same load.
The .30 Remington has a sharper shoulder angle and is very slightly forward of the shoulder of the .30-30. If you try to full length size the .30 Remington in .30-30 dies you will cause an excess headspace situation which can result in head separations in a couple firings. Use .30 Remington dies for this cartridge.
And jn, do not hotrod the .30 Remington, or any cartridge for that matter, in a Model 141 Remington. They are not known for being particularly strong, and it is not too difficult to set back the locking recess in the receiver. Stick to book data, and preferably use a chronograph when working up loads and stop when you achieve factory load velocity, even if the load isn't up to the load maximum shown in the manuals.

Re: .30 Remington?
I bought a very nice 141 a couple of Months ago. Mine was made in 1936, second year production. The 141 is a second generation with Mod's from the Model 14, first production year of 1912. For information go to the Remington Collector's site.
I bought my Die's from a Shooter in New York, with some brass. Additional 100 rounds of Brass was purchased from Graf's.
Do not Reload and size with 30-30 dies, they are not the same length and the shoulder angle is quite different.
I have been shooting cast bullets in my 141 after working up some nice loads using Alliant RL7 and Accurate 5744 with a 173 gr. Laser-cast GC bullet. Accuracy at 50 yards, with the original iron sights is 1 1/2" extreme spread for five shots. I cronographed my RL 7 load and the average of 5 shots is 1550 Fps with a Standard Diviation of 10. This load is right out of the Alliant reloaders guide for a Cowboy 30-30 load. The Powder is 15.8 grains.
The 5744 load was Chrono'ed at 1507 Fps average for five shots with an SD of 10. Powder load of 16 grains. Same accuracy as above.
I tried SR4759 also same bullet, five shots across the Chrono. Average 1590 Fps, SD 27 with 15.5 gr. of powder. This load produced a five shot 50 yard group of 2 1/4".
Be sure and slug your bore, I was surprised when I got it clean after 60 some years of fouling to find a near mint bore that is .3075".
I have not shot jacketed bullets in this piece. I would assume it to be very accurate.
I found two boxes of partial factory Winchester .30 Remington factory ammo recently. Which I will keep unfired. At the Gun Shows .30 Remington fetches a price of $40.00 to $50.00 a box of 20. I bought my partial boxes for $6.00 & $5.00 each.
Ask around, good used dies are out there. The Dies I found were never used, as I cleaned off the original packing grease, and was the first to adjust them to a press. A good find for $25.00 I think.
As stated above do not Hot Rod this Caliber & Gun. If you have not taken it down yet, it is one beautiful piece of Gun Art.
My 141 is factory D&T'd for a Tang sight, and this was a surprise. Both Lyman & Marbles made Tang type sight's for the Model 141. I am now looking for an original Tang for my 141, at a reasonable price of $100.00 or less. Marbles in 2010 is going to come out with a line of vintage tang sights for several classic models of various Rifles. The 141 Reminton is on the list.
The Model 14 and the later 141 was Remington answer to the Classic Winchester 94. Not a great popular piece like the 94 Winchester's or Marlin. Just one beautiful slide action classic Rifle. The Series, Model 14's and 141 were made in six calibers during it's lifetime. Model 14A's were chambered in 38-40, and 44-40. As a Carbine 20" variant. Model 14's & 141's, chambered in .25, .30, .32, & .35 Remington. With the .25 being the least produced.
I hope you find some Dies, you are in for a real treat. The Remington 141's shoot very well. Enjoy, you own a very classic slide-action piece of American Gun Art.

Re: .30 Remington?
A note about the Model 14 Carbine in 25 Remington. One was on gunbroker last month and had over 50 bids. It finally sold for something like $2800 and it did not look in pristine condition. It had a pistol grip which I never knew came on the 14 Carbine.
Thought they always had straight stocks.

No worries, fellers, I am certainly no hot-rodder, I have some 170 grain cast lead gas checked bulllets I am looking forward to using in this old guy, and only want them to shoot out to 100 yards. Thanks for all your replies and info.

Re: .30 Remington?
Isn't the 6.8SPC related to the .30 Remington? Could those dies be made to work in a pinch?

6.8 SPC is .277",(.270) caliber, case is shorter & neck shoulder is different.
Yes, it is based on the .25-.30-.32 Remngton cartridge case.

Re: .30 Remington?
Huntington's has the dies and cases. Not cheap, but available. You can make 30 Remington cases from 30-30, but it requires a lathe. You turn off the rim from the 30-30 case and turn an extractor groove. You can use the same bullet seating die and neck sizing dies for both cases, but if you want to FL size, you will need the Remington die.

Re: .30 Remington?
You can get by with a .30 Remington sizer die, only. like Charles stated. I use my 30 caliber Lyman "M" die for expanding and belling, then the 30-30 RCBS seater die. And I crimp with my Lee Factory crimp die.
If you have 30-30 dies, buy only a sizer die.

Re: .30 Remington?
It has been a long time since I have bought a seating die. I use either a Vickerman die, or a chamber seating die by Wilson or home made. I am a strong believer in straight/in line seating of bullets. With the proper extended shell holder, a good 30 caliber Vickerman die, will seat every 30 caliber case under the sun. Chamber seating dies are just as good although they are "caliber specific".
