OT: inane giggling

Post by KWK »

After living overseas for four years, we moved back to my hometown in Illinois. One thing I've noticed is the amount of inane giggling Americans are now doing. It's akin to sprinkling sentences with the word "like" and just as irritating. The speaker will give a silly, girlish giggle as his sentence trails off. I hear it on the radio, and today my son's orthodontist, who is older than I, was doing it. It's often accompanied by a big poop-eating grin.

Did I just not notice the emergence of this before we moved? Is it local to Illinois? Am I just getting to be a grumpy old fanny burp?

It's the drugs the Dems are putting into the chemtrails to turn us all into valley-girls...

The giggling isn't half as bad as the unending inane prattle that goes with it though...

My mom has long been one to cackle at the end of her sentences, but that's my mom. It wasn't common in the populace before.

My kids know better than to do the giggling and "like" foolishness here at home. They tried to bring it home from school, but soon tired of dad grilling them as to the why of what they were doing (or was it my mocking them?) -- problem cured. I haven't yet stamped out their abuse of the word "so." My wife is a foreigner and follows the trend of using "so" to mean "very," so I'm having trouble getting the proper lessons to my kids; I'll win in the end.

More of the dumbing down of America. First they forgot how to write, now they're forgetting how to carry on an intelligent conversation.

OTOH - Ted Nugent does have that tendency to giggle, but usually after he's said something really cutting about the liberal/socialist crowd, so I forgive him for it.

You can't discount the grumpy old fanny burp angle. Don't ask me how I know!

But seriously, you know, its like, well, this is my thing, hehehehehehehe, I don't like it either. Talk, chuckle maybe, growl, spit on the ground (not inside the building!) but don't giggle if you're a male and over 8 years old.
Sincerely,

Hobie

I say "like" alot, which is frustrating to me because I find it so annoying to hear in others' speech, plus I resent the implication that I am so weak-minded as to allow other people's negative habits to infect me.

I also find it annoying to listen to people who can only speak in present tense: "The other day, I'm at Britney's house, and she's all like, 'blah blah blah,' and I'm like, whatever, you know? And so she's like...

Other than quick exchanges with cashiers, shipping and receiving clerks... I'm pretty much alone 24/7 for weeks on end. My dog Keylock isn't much of a conversationalist which keeps things quiet in the cab of this ol' Kenworth.

Hated that book; as with most sci-fi, it's garbage. :o Yup, I said it. Dr. Who sucks, too! Yeah I bet you smack me around for that, in an alternate reality, huh, geekboy? I just hate sci-fi, but get a kick out of the folks that take it too seriously.

May be the result if too much political correctness. When I was young(er) it was mostly young girls but in those days it was mostly young girls afraid to speak their minds. Now it is hardly worth talking anymore else the thought police pounce on you for some offence real or imagined.
