I know that more than a few of you fellas have one of these guns and I would sure appreciate your advice. It took me a few months of searching but finally found a new Rossi M92 20" .357/38, that I decided to buy. Waited another week for it to be delivered and just opened the box on it two days ago.
What a disapointment. At first the action was jamed and wouldn't open then. after fooling with it, it opened but felt like a real thing. Well I researched the problem. The ejector and sping are ejecting themselves out of the front of the bolt.
I downloaded some very good instructions on how to disassemble and reassemble a M92. Nothing has made me appreciate the elegance of the Marlin lever action design as much as this M92. I guessing, but I imagine most folks just clean the barrel from the muzzle and call it good.
After spending 3 hours on the problem to reinstall and reinstall and reinstall the ejector, spring and collar. I gave up. Either there is some magic trick to hold the ejector stationary and together with it's spring and collar while installing the hammer assembly, the lower tang/trigger assembly and the driving the bolt pin back into place, or one or all of those ejector parts are faulty on a new rifle. Gee what are the odds.
Anyway, the government says it my property now so do I send it back to Rossi in Miami and see how long that takes or just give up and send it to Stevesgunz and bite the bullet.
That rifle sure doesn't seem like much of a bargain now.
Thanks for your advice.
JP

Sorry to hear of the difficulties with the Rossi. I highly recommend sending it to Stevesgunz. He will work magic on it. My Rossi 357 was rough when new, but after Steve's work, it is slicker than my Marlin. My kids had a great time busting crawfish mounds with it out at the range. It's still my son's favorite.

Use a fired case held in the extractor.
Get Nate's DVD. You'll love that little Rossi. www.stevesgunz.com

Tycer is exactly correct. The fired case pushes back on the ejector, and this keeps the spring compressed. A Snap Cap will also work.
Steve's DVD is also an excellent tool.
You will get the hang of it.

+1 on that, and same for spare parts buying/fitting. Love the Marlins.JP_TX wrote:I downloaded some very good instructions on how to disassemble and reassemble a M92. Nothing has made me appreciate the elegance of the Marlin lever action design as much as this M92.
Of course "the government" will come take it at 3 a.m. after some flash-bang grenades whenever they decide it isn't yours anymore, but given the choice of Rossi or Stevesgunz, I'd take Stevesgunz. Time delay may be the same, but Steve will fix it BETTER than 'new' vs. Rossi making it as GOOD as new.JP_TX wrote:Anyway, the government says it my property now so do I send it back to Rossi in Miami and see how long that takes or just give up and send it to Stevesgunz and bite the bullet.
If you are patient enough to simply re-try it a couple times, you may get it cycling and functioning just fine, but if any doubts just send it to Steve.
In my opinion, the Rossi's are very nice, if a bit 'rough' (probably no rougher than the original 1892's shipped over the years past), but they DO have too many little parts vs. the Marlins.

JP,
Have you read any of these?:
http://stevespages.com/pdf/browning_b92.pdf
http://stevespages.com/pdf/rossi_puma_92.pdf
http://stevespages.com/pdf/winchester_1892.pdf
The first one, for the B92, is actually an official Field Service Manual. The other two are just owner's manuals.

Steve will do you right and will LOVE that rifle when he is done with it.

Steve's DVD is great step by step instruction to fix that problem. I've done the actions on my 357 & 454 Puma's off of his DVD. Both rifles cycle cartridges smoothly now!!
