Got a Couple new Marlins (Range Report)

Post by 2ndovc »

Well Guys it's been a great couple days around here.

Yesterday I picked up the 1895 Century .45-70 that I bought from hfcable ( Thanks Doc!).

My dealer called and told me that the mailman had just dropped off one of the prettiest rifles he's
ever seen. He wasn't kidding. The pictures don't do it justice.

Even with the long barrel she's perfectly balanced. Shoulders like it was made for me.

Then today I stopped by the local Gander Mtn. and spotted this Golden 39-A in the
rack that was marked $249.00!
Needless to say it followed me home. Dates out to 1963 Pretty good shape.
Maybe a little better than my '57 vintage 39a.

Came with the mount attached. The rear sight sucks so I may stick on an old
Weaver K4 that I have sitting around.

Good stuff!

Range report tomorrow. Can't wait.

Great new rifles, but that 39A was a smoking steal!
I know a whole lot about very little and nothing about a whole lot.

Oh baby that is a looker. I was 1 minute from dropping Doc a line on that one. You beat me to it. That butt plate will be lots-o-fun with hairy loads. Have fun J. 1886.

Thanks Guys...

If the Century shoots half as good as it looks it gonna be
one of those "forever guns".

Didn't need the 39 but what's that got to do with it?? :D
Just got done giving it a good cleaning. Was supprisingly clean inside
and the bore is perfect. Mounted the old Weaver on it. The only
3/8" rings I had in my parts box were see through. Don't like the way
it looks but it will do for this weekend.

Just noticed while I was taking pictures the bullseye is missing from my other 39.
No idea how long it's been gone. Hoping I find it lying around somewhere.

Got to the range this morning.
Looks like with a little work the Century is a keeper. :D
Image
Nice and quiet when I got there!

Shoots really low with the factory rear sight even at the highest setting.
No biggie. Don't really need it. The tang site works but I need to work on it.
The set screw wont tighten down enough to keep it in place. No biggie but
I know it affected my groups because I hit it everytime I fired a round.

Image
just a quick test of some loads I have for other 45-70s.All shooting was at 50 yds.
Center target is 405 Gr Cast Performance WFNGC and 42 Gr. Varget. Once I
got it on the target I got some respectable performance. Like this load a lot.
Right target is a nice lite target load of 300 gr. LFP and 11 Gr unique. Shoots
great from my Trapdoor but The Marlin just didn't like it.

Left target is 405 Gr Reminington JSP and 54 Gr. Varget. Ouch! That butt plate
bites! Developed a little bit of a flinch on the third round
Thats enough of that for now.
A little tweaking and she's gonna be a real shooter!! Needs a butt cuff/ pad
though.

Got the 39a out and then the Mongol Hordes pulled in.
The whole family and every gun they own. Doesn't happen much at our range
and I shouldn't complain
but holy cow.
After spending half an hour and a roll of duct
tape putting up their targets one of them plops down beside me with a 16" barreled
AR and just starts ripping through mags. Dork!
The .22 shoots just fine. The only rings I had are see throu and look silly.
Will pick up some new ones and try again.

Looking forward to more range time with these two!

Jason,
Well Lordy be...I never knew Marlin had such a nice piece of wood hanging around the factory. :D Super!

Those newer Lyman sights are near junk. (don't take this personally, as I have a half dozen of 'em :D ) This is how I fix 'em----Take out the set screw that holds on the stem and run a sharp tool where the set screw was and mark the stem. Then get yourself a drill bit thats just a hair smaller than the set screw...........drill down about 20 thou, or enough so the set screw will indent into the stem and hold it.

I've had those stems go flying off. Just today a new Marbles sight took a stuff on me as the stem is all floppy.-J---U---N---K...........this new stuff is. I have sights on rifles that were made in the 1880's--1920 period that work just as good as the day they were made.

A little bit of non hardening gook-glue around the stem will help to keep that part from being wobbly too. -------Sixgun

Beautiful! I got one of the Doc's rifles too. I can say without hesitation that he's my favorite radiologist now.

Nice rifles Jason. Coincidentally, I found a 39A at Cabelas about 3 yrs ago that happens to be a 1963 and I paid $249 too!
