.22 Shorts -- i guess i'll take 'em

Wandering through my local Sam Walton founded emporium and stopped by the sportings goods counter for the umpteenth time in the past month --- nothing for .22's except Shorts at 3$ a box and Mags at $10 a box.w

I should have bought all they had when they had semi full shelves 2 weeks ago --anyhoo. Plenty of Shorts available, so i bought a few boxes --- i guess it has come down to this. Of course the shorts work fine in a levergun or a single six, but i never thought i would start stockpiling .22 Shorts because nothing else was available.

Kids generations ago harvested all kinds of small game with the shorts, so i guess if push really comes to shove, having about 10 or 15 boxes of these around may be beneficial (i really like the soft report they have as well)

When my aunt died, she left me her Colt Diamondback & her Remington 552 Delux.
The 552 is a semi auto that will shoot short, long or long rifle, I would like to have some shorts around for pest control.

My 9422 is marked 22 S, L, LR. When I first got it it would feed anything. The last time I had some shorts it didn't seem to do so well.

I haven't seen any since. But I'll keep my eyes out for 'em.

I always try to keep some shorts on hand for popping garden raiding rabbits but I've noticed they are not as plentiful as they used to be. Back in the late 1970's there was no work to be had so all of my income came from a couple of traplines and coon hunting (fur was a decent price then) I carried an old H&R Sportsman .22 revolver loaded with shorts since they were cheaper than long rifles then and they didn't damage pelts much.
They worked well on most anything on the trap line except for one night I caught the absolute biggest 'possum I've seen before or since and I popped him in the head with a short,he collapsed and I removed him from the trap and started on down the line,About 30 minutes later I felt him move and looked down and his was wide awake and appeared to be aggravated with me. I put another short in his ear and that settled things for good. When I skinned him out I found the first slug had flattened out on the top of his skull making a small indention but no penetration through the skull into the control room. I don't know if that particular round was a bit underpowered or if he was just really hard-headed but that's the only time I ever remember anything like that happening with the .22 shorts at close range.

Shorts are dandy. Now try finding 22 longs - that's one that I don't believe anyone's making any more. Yet I had a lot of good use out of some that my dad had on hand way back when. The old Marlin bolt gun really liked them and I made some amazing shots with it using them. I think I've got a box or so stashed aways somewhere up north, but old stock. Haven't seen any new ones for sale in ages...

Now that You mention it, I can't remember the last time I saw a box of Longs for sale.

Circa 2005 (I was working in a gunshop at the time) new production CCI .22 Shorts and Longs were still available. CB Caps as well.


I never had much use for .22 shorts for practice, though for pest control i can see they would be handy. I had a friend shooting her first rifle (she had grown up, but still shot it) a .22 Cricket I think? Single shot boltgun, with .22 shorts. Her friend (later boyfriend/fiance/husband) found out the hard way my Taurus 62 carbine only fed LR after he put a dozen in........

We didn't hammer him too bad, he was a network security specialist in the Air Force, and his entire shooting experience was 90 rounds with an M16A2 prior to that trip.....he's been properly educated now!

I haven't seen any longs in eons, or since I was a kid anyway. Federal shows only Long Rifle and WMR. Winchester still shows Shorts, Longs and Long Rifle plus 22 Magnums and 22 WMR. So I suppose they are all still out there if you want them.

I have a box of shorts that I have been using for several years. My Remington 550 that my father bought for me in 1953 feeds them just fine and the long barrel is quiet with them.

I'm still seeing a value pac of Federals every so often and I get what I can..... I should prolly get a bunch of CCI 22 mags or other Mags since they seem to be not that popular.

My opinion is the .22 mags are the vunerable of the rimfire bunch.
There are in existence far fewer .22 mag firearms , than L.R. firearms.

I like the shorts. Try finding short hollow points. Wish they were easier to find. CCI and Winchester both have made some fairly recently. They kill small game much better than solids or CB's.

I use the quieter loads for grouse and small game hunting with my dogs. They are a little gunshy, but the quieter loads don't bother them much. Subsonic 22 LR HP loads are good for quiet also.

Fortunately I was able to get about 2000 .22LR stock piled before prices jumped too much. That should hold me for a while. I still buy a brick every time I see them in stock.

I prefer shorts over anything else. They are quieter and less prone to tearing up rabbits and squirrels. Besides...you can get a whole days shooting in your front pocket! I've got a couple thousand rounds on hand right now, and will probably order more whenever I make another order, I also keep a brick of them at dads farm. I shot my first squirrel with my grandfathers rifle and shorts when I was a kid. I'm also teaching the 6 yr. old to shoot with shorts. IMO they are the perfect small game cartridge. Besides, I don't scope any rifles except the 25-06, and my irons limit me to about 50 yards or so with squirrels anyway. No reason to shoot LR's except the economy, and I'll spend an extra fifty cents or so a box for the shorts.

I've got about 1500 rounds of assorted Winchester and CCI High Velocity, CB, and Target shorts. I too haven't seen any type of shorts, in loooooong time, except for the crappy Remington HV's.

I like the idea of shorts but haven't seen them around much. When I have they're more expensive. I compromise with the Remington subsonic which also happens to group the best in my gun, and they don't jam on me either.

But I may try the shorts again.

My 9422 is also marked S,L,LR but it was proofed in Germany and they crossed out the "S" I still have a few shorts that I used in my Erma lever action, I'll have to see if they feed in the Winchester!

If you like the shorts but they wont feed, try the longs. They are loaded to short velocity but I find they feed better in repeating rifles than shorts do. I have some CCI longs stashed away, it used to be the ammo of choice for me in my Remington 514 rifle when I hunt squirrels, lately I have been using a 1906 Winny and PMC longrifles. I sure wish ammo companies would start bringing back more flavors of the 22 long.

My father taught me how to shoot with a Remington 550 in .22 LR (like another poster in this thread), but he didn't have me shoot LRs through it at first--he had me shoot .22 Shorts. They can still be a viable defense round, as no one wants to get shot with anything, eveb a .22 Short. And they can be a viable game-getting round, too. Squirrels, rabbits, grouse, and the occasional turkey could probably be taken with the round.

my gander mountain and local shops have the longs from CCI also. Two of my local shops have plenty of 22 ammo though one of them has started limiting buying to one box of ammo alone, or two if you buy a gun in that caliber. never thought I would see the day.

My grandfather used shorts exclusively in his old Winchester single shot. He said that he always used shorts because the were 10ȼ a box when LR's were 15ȼ a box. When supper every single day consisted of the one squirrel he shot before lunch every morning while clearing fields, that 5ȼ a box made a difference. My grandmother once said to me that she got so sick of squirrel during those years, that if she never ate another squirrel it would suit her fine
