OT - What Qualifies a Marlin Mountie?

Post by okdee »

I have a Marlin Model 39a lever-action rifle that was passed down to me a while back, and I noted a couple Mounties for sale, but I do not think that mine is a mountie, but I am curious. There seems to be a fan club of them.

I appreciate any help and any pictures, ta boot! :D

Is it a straight grip 20" barrel? When was it made?

I stole this photo from elsewhere, the top gun is a Mountie (a NICE one).

Good Morning Hobie! The sun is shinin here in Houston, and traffic is kinda crawlin, all this from the window of my cave!

My Marlin 39a has a 24" barrel, I think. It is not 20", I know that. I believe it is a straight stock. Dang it, I have a memory block all of sudden!

So, are you sayin a Mountie has a 20" barrel?

If you have a 24" barrel and straight stock, then you may have one of the very rare first year Mounties. This was the only year they had a 24" barrel and still had Ballard rifling.

Under the lever, what is the serial number "letter" prefix? If it's "K" your a lucky guy.

AFAIK, all Mounties have a straight-grip buttstock.

I believe Mounties also have 20" barrels - but there was also a Model 39D (IIRC) that had a straight stock/24" barrel, if I'm not having a senior morning.

If it has a pistol-gripped buttstock, it's a Model 39/39a of some ilk.

I wasn't aware of the 1st year Mountie config - Thanks, jdad !

This is a "K". It went CHEAP! I've seen them sell for as much as $1000.

The Mountie is a 20" carbine, straight stock, saddle ring with a gold trigger. I have alway wanted one, Am still looking for one, for the right price.
A few Months back I bought a very nice Model 1897, color cased receiver, 24" tapered octagon barrel. Made in 1905, and it is one swell shooter.
My 97 is worth more than a Mountie.

My 1955 Mountie has neither a saddle ring nor a gold trigger. Then again, it has little blue remaining, either. Outstanding rifles!

Well, I am looking at my Marlin 39-A lever action rifle.
The barrel length is no quite 24"
The serial number starts with the letter "D" 20112.
My Dad's card notes that he bought it in 1948 in KC Kansas.
It has a Chrome Lever on it.
No gold trigger.

Sure that lever is chrome, and not just polished off bluing? Your gun is a 1947 vintage, but not a Mountie, as they were not made that early and it's pistol gripped. Very nice gun, and if the lever were blued it would be worth more. It also looks like it's got the optional scope mounting done on the barrel as an extra back then, plus the correct period scope. All in all a very neat setup. I'd consider trying some cold blue on the lever. If it takes then it's just been polished out, and not chromed. If so get it blued, and reinstall it.-Vall

It IS a super nice 39A...well taken care of. It's been customized in perfect period style. Just some trivial stuff you may want to know.

The sling swivels did not start until 1957, but since this looks like a rifle that went into the field, to put meat on the table, they look great.

Marlin did not offer the D&T barrel until 1954 and stopped in 1957 when they started D&Ting the receiver. Your rifle looks great with the period scope.

If you ever want to get the correct ramped front sight assembly and rear sight you can call these guys. www.dickwilliamsgunshop.com They will send you the correct original parts, the first time, and at a really fair price.

That's a great rifle to own, especially with the family history.

Thanks MarlinMan and jdad!

I am pretty proud of this handme down from Dad! It does have a chrome lever and it is specifically noted in my Dad's notes.

This is one of the few guns my 12 (soon to be 13) year old boy, lays a claim to!

I need to purchase a nice leather sling for it. Any thoughts?

Marlin is discontinuing their slings, but they still may have some. Call their customer service number and ask if they have any left.
