Winchester 92 Question for Steve Young?

Post by Henry McCann »

I have a current post about 92 replicas...You being the aficionado on such rifles, here is what I've been thinking in the way of a 92 in .45 Colt.

I have owned a Winchester 71 and still currently own a Browning 71. I have also owned a Winchester 64 and currently own 3 Marlin 336A's. (The early ones with pistol grip, 2/3's magazine and 24" barrel). I love the configuration of PG, 2/3's magazine and 24 inch barrel.

What is the availability for barrels and a new PG buttstock for the 92"s? Replace the barrel and (lower part of the receiver???) to take the new pistol grip stock. Other concerns? I know, as a friend used to always say, with enough money and time, anything can be done, but is this reasonably feasible or lots of money?

Thanks for your time and help!

I also like your basic idea. Years ago I had "in`s" with some good cheap gunsmiths and had stuff like that done. I had a shotout no finish 92 in 25-20 that I had the barrel rerifled to .357 mag. Bought new wood, reblued and it was hard to tell from new. Another time had a old 73 in same shape and had it converted to .38 special. Didnt cost a fraction what it would now. (35 years ago). Go to this lead to see a refinished 65. I also am posting a picture of a old win 90 I own that someone before me had pistol gripped probley by heating and bending the tangs and added a fancy wood stock with cheek piece and checkering. It was in .22 WRF. I had my smith ream it and convert it to .22 WMRF. I would look for a beatup winchester model 65 and redue it, of find a browning 65 repro. Good luck! All it takes is money!

Custom barrels are certainly available but that would be a blank turned and threaded to the configuration you want$$$$. I had thought about using one of the Rossi straight octagons and have it turned half round. So there are some barrel options. I think Precision Gunworks still makes a pistol grip stock for the 92/94 and it can be adapted to the Rossi, so wood wouldn't be a problem. The problem is finding a bent lever and lower tang for the pistol grip stock. I've only seen one so I bought it. I might sell it if you are serious about doing this. If you are email me.

We think along similar lines, Henry. I lust for a 26 or 28 in round barrel over a button magazine, but I do like straight stocks. NKJ's suggestion to use a half round barrel is interesting...

What if you started with one of the Browning model 53's?

KWK, would it look something like this. Only this is a 1915 30-30 "94" Winchester. It was a special order with button mag, half round barrel and express sight. The bad part is that it has been re-blued and the stock refinished but it shoots great. :) Sorry for the photo. I took it on the floor with a flash.

I have an early Interarms Rossi 45 Colt with a half-octagon, half round barrel. If I don't get it traded in the next few days, I would probably sell it to you for $500, shipped. It's like new in the box with the paperwork. It even came with a longer tang screw for use with a tang sight. I can take some better pictures, if you are interested.

Thanks to all, especially Steve...I definitely have some options to think about. Steve, let me decide how serious I am about this, in regards to the lever and lower tang.

As much as I love the look of a PG, 2/3's magazine and 24" barrel, that 94 of rangerider7 with the button mag and straight grip is one good looking levergun. Plus, that configuration would save me on lever, lower tang and new buttstock.

edwardyoung, Does the Rossi have a 24" barrel?

Thanks again to all. I used to have a Browning 53 and 65 and loved those rifles; but they were sold when a full time job became a part time job and a move to another part of the state.

Yes. 24" barrel. The trade I had in the works isn't going to happen; so if you want it, let me know. If you have a 357 lever action rifle to trade, I might be interested. That is what I was working on with the other guy. Thanks

Henry, I attempted to send you a PM regarding something you mentioned in this thread. The site said it was sent successfully, but I I noticed it is sitting in the outbox. Thanx for any help, jd45

EdwardYoung, that's the same rifle I have. Yours is the only other one I've seen--I bought mine used about five years ago. It is an Interarms Rossi, pre-safety, of course.

Steve Young, were very many of these made ? I really like the looks of the 1/2 round barrel, but the carbine-style barrel band is slightly diffrent from the ones on the carbines--something do do with the taper of the barrel, I think--and it requires a longer magazine plug screw. The one I have has a problem with the screw constantly jarring loose under recoil, even with cowboy loads, and the mag tube then backs 'forward' a few inches, sending the groups down and to the left. Kinda frustrating.
