Cancer, of one kind or another, is the scourge of mankind - so many are lost to it.

My Mom was 87 when she passed from it.

I got back home this afternoon, had about 4 days with my dad to talk and visit. I'm not sure who is the most amazing to me, him, or you forum friends. As I look over your comments I see the cares and concerns of you all, and am deeply appreciative of your messages.


It was sort of funny, he had to get into many tales of the past of his driving career as a gasoline transport driver. Back in the middle 40's Kenworth built a good number of trucks that used a Hall Scott Engine, known as a 400 series---they burned raw carbureted butane for fuel. They were well ahead of the competition for power and torque and ability to scoot over steep-grades quickly. I've heard many of those stories before, but enjoyed them so much this time. He spoke of many old Peterbilts and Kenworths in those days, pulling an empty 40 foot flatbed up the Grape Vine from Bakersfield, California, doing all of 12 or 13 miles an hour empty. That Hall Scott with 6300 gallons of motor oil on would pull the Grapevine about 23 miles an hour loaded, sporting about 2 feet of blue flame out the stack, turning the entire exhaust system cherry red at night. He said that under the hood the whole engine looked like Las Vegas at night when it had pulled that mountain.

Oh well, just stories, from an old man who did these things over 60 years ago, but most employers didn't turn kids or idiots loose with a Hall Scott in those days. I guess I'll live his stories on in my mind, he was my dad. Thanks guys, for your encouragement.
