I know a lot of us on the forum like airplanes - especially military aircraft (and it's not just Don Tomas ). I thought you'd all enjoy these pictures:
Thank you Ysabel. Very neat...I had not seen most of those. The B-17 fitted with a turbo prop sure blew me away....as well as the one fitted with Allison V-1710's. As always...love the Mustangs, Thunderbolt's and Lightnings.

That was a great deal of human ingenuity there. Thanks for that post.

VERY intersting post! The P-51, in it's Merlin powered models, could easily outmaneuver the ME-262. It made most of the experimental piston powered aircraft redundant, remaining in service for nearly 40 yrs. i wouls love to have witnessed an Allison, or better yet, Merlin powered B-17. The Brits excellent Lancaster proved the worth of extra HP.

Yep - but here's the plane that made flying real for the world -
I stumbled onto this in the back of a hanger while just flying my Cessna 172 around the state one Sunday afternoon for relaxation in 1976.- it looked new (I thought Piper Cubs came out of the factory with 1000 hours on the Hobbs meter) . It was owned by a crop duster that had never put it in service and had 20 hours on the Hobbs meter (FTO - Ferry Time Only). I put over 700 hours on it and did some back country deliveries with it ( I have a commercial license but never made much money with it - I usually was delivering cargo into back country and that doesn't pay much). The most fun was flying into San Francisco International Airport - I don't think they had ever seen such before and I had to jump through hoops before they were convinced I was a real pilot and not just a hick from the sticks. For the knowledgeable, I was put on an intersection holding pattern while descending and they were convinced after the second 4 minute round. Probably some kind of record for them.
Piper stopped making them the following year - a real loss to the aviation community - even the world.

Love those Cubs/Super Cubs. My Dad flew one for Arizona Game and Fish for a number of years...I believe he still fly's for them occassionally. I now live back East, not far from the old Piper plant in Lock Haven, PA. You can still do a tour there. Sad that it went South and went belly up.
