Winchester 1886
Hello,
I am trying for the first time to post pictures in this forum. I really hope I don´t make a mess of everything.
Picture 1. Winchester Mod. 1886. Caliber 45-90. Mfg 1909.
Picture 2. Winchester Mod. 1886. Caliber 45-90. Octagonal. Mfg 1890.
Maybe a stupid question but what is the big difference if you compare the mod. 86 with the Mod 71? I am asking because I have never seen a Mod 71 in real.
Best regards,
Hombre

Re: Winchester 1886
Think of the 71 as a Model '86 Extra Light with a pistol-grip stock. The Rifle has a 24" barrel; the Carbine sports a 22" tube. Chambered in .348 Winchester only...

Re: Winchester 1886
Nice rifles! I have a similar half octagon button mag in 45-70, except with a rifle butt, from 1888. The half-round button mags are my favorite configuration.
Onto the 71s....first, the short rifles were 20 inches
The stock was a redesigned NRA-style, with a revised comb and drop in the butt, a rounder comb, and a wider and deeper butt plate. The forearm was beefed up a bit too, being a bit thicker and rounder than the 1886 forearms.
These two articles from the main page are must-reads. The second article has a detailed section discussing the differences:

The 71 also has very slightly angled locking lugs and a coil mainspring. Those are the only real differences between the '86 and 71. Winchester Proof Steel was used on the 71 barrels, as well as on some late 1886s. All of the 1886 lightweight and extra lightweight rifles had "Nickel Steel" barrels, which had a strength rating of 100,000 PSI+. I'm not sure what the "Proof Steel" barrels are rated at, but they were less costly to manufacture.

That 1890, half-octagon/button mag '86 is surely my favorite - both are very nice, indeed !
Besides what Mike posted above, the Model 71 only came in a single caliber, .348 Winchester, and in a single stock config, a pistol-grip - but there were uncheckered plain-jane Standard's and fancier, checkered Deluxe's to be had in the original Winchester's.
Like most fancier Brownings of both '86 & '71, the Miroku deluxe clones had pickled/silvered receivers with engraving/inlays/etc.

Hombre seems to find more nice old American arms over there than most of us do here! That 1886 is another fine example!-Vall
