Coined Recievers?

Post by morgan in nm »

OK, thought I would do an on-topic subject today. I have one of those Browning Montana 86's and it is probably my favorite to shoot. When I was reading about it, the article says "coined" finish on the reciever. What exactly is that? When I look at it, it looks almost like stainless.

Plated steel? Is it somewhat durable because I am thinking of taking my next deer with it.

Thanks by the way for the quick response, Morgan.

Could be. Coin finish or French Grey are kinda generic terms. The best are a matte or brushed chrome or nickle plating. I suspect the browning 86's are this. But, some makers just did a brush or matte finish with a clear coat over it. I've read where some casehardened gun were left gray with a clear coat to protect it. Sorta like color-case but without the color.

The term "coin finish", for metals, means that the finish visually looks like a new (silver) coin - for those of you that haven't been around long enough to have actually had real silver US coinage for pocket change. ;) 8)

I try to pick up Morgan silver dollars now and then. Something about those old coins fuels my soul. Like old guns, knives and such...

I figured that it was the new Gunbroker way of describing a scratched-up reciever that looks like it has been tumbled in a dryer with a bunch of WWII steel nickles...
