Krylon and rifles Part 2
As promised I put together a step by step of how I paint my rifles. This is my H&R Survivor in .308 Win it stands out a bit to much in all black for my liking so it got an upgrade to the finish.
Here it is before.
I cleaned the outside of the gun with Windex masked off the parts I didnt want painted and primed the rifle with 3 coats of Krylon Cammo brown and let dry over night.
I then painted over it with the Cammo tan and started overlaying colors.
Once I got the colors to my liking it's time to get ready to make the shadow effect. I chose pine branches from around my yard this time of year they are the only things with foliage on them.
Lay the branches over the gun any way you like make sure there is space for the paint to get through to the gun or it wont work.
Spray over the gun from a distance of around 1' the idea is to get a mist not a heavy coat this makes the shadow effect. I used the Cammo flat black for this step but in the past I have used green and tan to get the look I wanted. Here is the finished gun.
As you can see the black is not a heavy coat but is really subtle the idea is not to cover up the base colors but just add some depth and soften the edges. I hope this helps if any one is looking to do some painting of their own.

Looks good! I've been thinking I should apply a clearcoat of polyurethane so as to prevent solvents from affecting the finish - do you do that?

No I dont do anything fancy like that when it gets to shiny and scratched up I just repaint so far I have found the Krylon to be pretty durable and Hoppes doesnt do much damage to the paint.O.S.O.K. wrote:Looks good! You can send me all the guns you want it may take me a couple years to get them back to you. I do need time to field test the patern I put on your gun to ensure that the critters dont see it.jeepnik wrote:I vote we just our guns to Jeremy for painting. He's pretty darned good at it.

Re: Krylon and rifles Part 2
Good job Jeremy. One of the guys at work has been doing an epoxy finish on short and long arms. It seems to be somewhat durable. Packing a piece on a daily basis will definitely test the durability of any finish.

Looks like you had fun with that rifle, now you need to send an after hunt report for all to enjoy.

Whatever you do, don't use any brake cleaner on your rifles done up with Krylon.... it eats Krylon for lunch...

Here is another project I did. This is my laptop the original finish had gotten really scratched up due to multiple field Ops and a trip to Iraq so it got a make over.
I used tomato bush clippings as the overlay.

Jeremy - these look great. Thanks for the step by step. I've never used Windex as a grease/oil remover. Sounds like it works really well.
Re: Krylon and rifles Part 2
It works great on glass so I figured why not. It does a good job with out harsh chemicals and I have yet to have a problem with the paint sticking.Ysabel Kid wrote:Hobie wrote: Now that is tacticooooooool!

I must say Kid I am dissapointed with you. I thought you of all people would notice my trespassing sign on the wall in the gun pics.

Re: Krylon and rifles Part 2
I did see it. I just couldn't find the picture of mine to use in poking fun at you! That's the problem with old age Jeremy - can't find nothing! Also didn't have time to snap another photo of it (it is still there, of course); had all the Scouts over this evening to work on their Pinewood Derby cars!JReed wrote: I must say Kid I am dissapointed with you. JReed,
Thats a good job your doing with the painting, I like it. If I tried to do that it would come out looking like I don't know what . I was a winger also, VMGR 252, CMC Airlift Command. I don' t miss the 20 hr work days trying to keep planes in the air, But sometimes I miss the airplanes.

The not knowing what your doing part is what makes it turn out well.RKrodle wrote:JReed,

Dont work on or fly in plains my self. Depending on what unit I am at I am either fixing stuff to shoot them down or fixing stuff so we can talk to them. I know its confusing.
Borregos go for it. It is a good project for crappy winter days.
