OT - Waist Packs

Post by cnjarvis »

I'm looking for a new waist pack and haven't found anything locally that I like. You guys have any suggestions as to brand/style?

I don't want to spend a mint either.

TIA

Here are a couple of places to look:

Have you considered the shoulder type bags instead? More comfortable.

I use a little cheapo belt pouch sometimes for concealed carry - just looks like a camera pouch.

For years I carried one that I got from the CHP. These days, I don't use a waist pack, instead prefering to carry in a Galso high rise holster under my jacket, or sometimes a little .380 in my inside pocket.

Perhaps I should clarify. I'm looking for a hunting pack, not a carry pack.

Are you talking about a waist pack like a fanny pack for carrying your gear while hunting or a waist style holster?
If it is a waist fanny pack, I recomend you get one with shoulder straps that way the weight doesn't feel like it is pinching you in half. I like Nirod packs for thier style and durablility, you can add thier scabbard and carry your rifle hands fre, I love mine.
As far as holsters go, heck I struggle with the best way to carry conceled all the time.

I got your clarifing response just as I was posting, try the Nirod packs, big enough and with the shouder straps youcan carry a fair amount of wieght.

Last one I got was from Cabelas, lots of room and comfortable with a wide strap.

I really like Waller and Sons bags. I have the Mariner. It is basic, no frills, but has held up well to continuous use and it floats with up to 5 lbs of stuff inside. Well I have never tested it, but that is what the company advertises. The offer a smaller bag as well called the Sub Mariner.

I have used one of these for many years, for hiking, travel, and hunting. Excellent piece of equipment.

I like the looks of those.

Look to be much more comfortable than either a fanny pack or regular backpack - I may have to invest in one of these...

I put together a LBE with the two huge canteens, and a couple ammo pouches and the butt pack.......pretty nifty. Maybe more than you want to spend, but my great grandkids will be using it someday, it's that tough. That, and a poncho/shelter and you could stay out for a few days if necessary. (tape the metal hooks in front, so you don't scratch your new rifle   )

For years, I used a fanny pack that was made out of an old denim pant leg. It had a couple of loops sewn into it to put on the belt. It measured about 10-12" wide and 8-10" deep. It held everything I needed for a day in the remote area I was hunting in. We hunted out of a base camp and carried what we needed for the day with us. IIRC, each day it held a pancake and Spam sandwich, half a large chocolate bar, a can of sardines, 8' of rope, some baling twine, matches, pitch for a fire starter, a space blanket, a large plastic garbage sack, flashlight, and extra batteries and bulb. I carried a compass, knife and extra shells in my coat pocket. I now have a store bought fanny pack, but it doesn't do anything more than the home made one did!

I use an old military gas mask bag. It slings over my shoulder and I shortened the strap a bit so it don't swing around too much. It is lined to be water proof and the opening rolls to shut. Pretty good set up. It holds enough for a hiking type bag but not for an over night deal.
