What scope on which rifle?

Post by FOTIS »

OK got a marlin guide gun in 45-70 and a Marlin 336 in 30-30.

I have a Weaver v3 (1-3x20) and a swift 1.5-4.5 x20mm.

Question is ( and it is an academic one) which scope on which gun?

45/70 = Weaver v3 1-3x20
30-30 = Swift 1.5-4.5 x20mm

There, done and done.

I agree with Old Time - and the reason is that the 45-70 needs the 1.5 setting more than the 30-30 IMHO. Also, the 30-30 would look better with the Weaver scope I think. Anyway, that's the way I visualized the answer.

Also, I suspect that the Swift has a little longer eye relief? The 45-70 needs it - the 30-30 not so much eh?

Hehehe - I thought I was the tie breaker and here's Ted squeeking in - still locked up I guess!

ETA - oh wait! That Weaver is a variable -1-3x - OK -the other way around. Sorry That should settle it? I thought the Weaver was K-3 for some reason.

Really, they are almost the same!

Put the greater magnifiation on the 30-30. Reason? FOV with a small scope is, well, small. Trajectory of .45-70 is such that higher magnification means yer "holdover" at XXX range would about put ya out of the glass.

Can you tolerate another viewpoint?
To me they are so close in viewing features, I'd lean toward their respective abilities to handle recoil. It's probably still argumentative but I'd trust the Weaver to hold up to recoil longer than the other,-Swift?

Well, if ya do it the other way around, when ya look through the scope, everything will look like it's far far away. Oh, you mean change the scope selection from one rifle to the other.

Get two more of the same scopes and two more of the same rifles and have both scopes on both rifles.....somebody had to say it!

I'm with Andrew:

The Weaver 1-3x on the guide gun because:

1) the 1 setting is ideal for defense and quick close shots and that's the guide gun's primary role

2) the Weaver is shorter and lighter and that should balance with the shorter gun better

3) the Weaver can take the recoil (not so sure about the Swift)

The Swift 1.5-4.5x on the 336 because:

1) you might take longer shots with the 30-30 and the extra magnification might come in handy

2) the rifle is longer and I believe the Swift scope is longer and a little heavier - so as a matter of balance it might work out better than with the guide gun.

How do you like the optics on that Swift? I have the Weaver but considered Swift.

I like the swifts. They are clear and true. They are not leupold but for the price you can not beat it.

I gave up on putting scopes on my good ol, Guide Gun. I blew out 2 scopes,(3 x 9's). Now I just use the XSights Ghost Ring sights. At 100 yards I can hit targets the size of your fist. Thats good enough for me. But do believe the (1 x ?) would be the best to use because of the recoil.
