Lazy day at the range today

Post by crs »

Here in Dallas it was a beautiful day to be outdoors: sunny, warm (72 degrees), and very little breeze. I took the 1886 out to Quail Creek to burn up some old cowboy ammo, sight in my new fold down barrel sight, and plink a few hunting rounds into 100 yard targets to be sure all is well for my upcoming cow elk hunt.
At the 25 yard range, the open barrel sight put 4 0f 5 Black Hills 400 grainers into one ragged hole (actually not ragged, just a hole). BUT it was 6" above point of aim - no problem, the Marbles sight is adjustable, so grab the screwdriver AND discover the fine flat blade is broken! Oh well, maybe next time.
The hundred yard shooting was OK using the peep tang sight with two of the 300gr Noslers cutting the same hole and the other a couple inches left - a sighting error flyer likely. The 325 grain Hornadys shot OK but will be backup to the Noslers for hunting.

Cleaned and oiled the rifle and am ready for another range day if the weather allows and if not, ready to drive to NM January 3rd to prepare for the hunt which starts on Jan 5. Now, if I can just get an elk to pose broad side at 100 yards or less and I can find a solid rest, it will be meat in the pot!

It's raining ice water and snow intermixed, so I'm thinking I'll try to go to the range tomorrow, should have it all to myself :) Am I crazy or what? If the winds not blowing too hard, just may go, weather not going to get much better for another three months... then it will be time to get ready for spring bear hunting!
