Good old Marlin 1894 comes through again
Thanks to the Indiana "rifle" season, my son got his second deer (first was a buck, last year) today with his (formerly my ) 1894 in 44 mag, using factory Winchester 240 soft points.
It was a doe and dropped like a sack of flour.
A guy in the gun shop a few weeks ago was buying some of those $3 apiece saboted slugs and saying he liked them because they were not only accurate, but were 'awesomely powerful' - the box said it fired a 250 grain [saboted pistol] bullet at 1875 fps. The funny part is that a few minutes earlier someone came in wanting a Handi-Rifle in .44 Mag, and this guy was one of the ones who talked him out of it and into a Handi-Rifle in .500 S&W, because they didn't think that a .44 Mag had enough 'punch' for whitetail.
I've not chrono'd my son's loads/gun, but I'll bet that what he's sending downrange is just about identical to those fancy saboted slugs. Deer don't seem to complain about the difference, anyhow.

It's amazing the NONSENSE you sometimes hear in gun shops, especially from so called "experts"!!

Very true. I had a so-called "expert" tell me once that the 30-30 was "ok" for kids and women to shoot 80 lb deer with at 50 yards! I laughed out loud and then calmed myself enough to thank him for that nugget of wisdom. Imagine that, he was actually mad that I laughed! Congrats to you and your son. Thanks, Tom

Congratulations!

Hmmmm. Maybe that deer was sick or something. Everyone knows that deer are much tougher than they were a hundred years ago. Used to, you could bump one off with a .38-40 or something. Nowadays, anything less than a .300 WinMag just makes 'em irritable.
Have you hugged your rifle today?

Congrats on your son's buck!
As for the caliber of the round used, I have two words:
Bullet placement!

Congrates to both of you boys As the others have said, most hunters are unknowledgeable about ballistics snd what it takes to bring down a mighty thin skinned animal. Just smile and keep on walkin'---------------------------Sixgun

Congratulations! I, too seem to have lost my 1894 .44 Mag. to my oldest Grandson last Wednesday with him bagging his first deer. Gosh, it wasn't a powerful saboted load but, an old 250 grain cast bullet I made myself and the velocity was only 1538 fps. Sure wish I had known it was inappropate for deer.

Yep - the only bummer with my son is that neither of his deer have had much left if you like heart meat. He knows where to put his bullets...!BlueStateSaint wrote:Congrats on your son's buck!

AJ, when I lived in IN they didn't have a rifle season at all - shotgun, muzzleloader and bow, but no rifle of any kind. Glad to hear they added the pistol-caliber rifle; it's about time!
Re: Good old Marlin 1894 comes through again
My son made TONS of venison with that rifle and bullet combo. It's a good bet your son will also. Glad he got the good gun to start with. There's almost no way to improve that load, given the slow twist, in any meaningful way.

Tell him congratulations for me, I don't know how he gets by with such a puny gun
