I noticed that several have the limited edition in 30-06, but I am wondering if anyone has one in 30-40 and what do you think about it.

Personally, mine is in 30-06 but I have a close friend who has one in 30-40 Krag and he likes it very much and I consider him very knowledgeable about guns.brokenhand wrote:I noticed that several have the limited edition in 30-06, but I am wondering if anyone has one in 30-40 and what do you think about it.

It is worth noting that the Boone & Crockett largest elk was taken west of Crested Butte, CO, with a Winchester 95 in 30-40 Krag.

Re: Winchester Mod. 95 SRC in 30-40
I've come close to buying one a couple of times.
The 30-40 is an ecxellent round and works very well in the 95. The Model 95 is my favorite and have many, though none of the new ones.
I've also found that the rimmed cartridges work better in the original Winchesters. Although my favorite is a 1920 vintage SRC in '06. Every once in a while it wont
feed the second round in the magazine. But she's old and well used

Here is my original 95 in 30/40. It was made right at end of production. I have had it 35 or 40 years. When I bought it, it was without the rear sight. I put on one that works with out drilling. I have the handguard. It is accuarate. I really havent shot it a lot.

I bought a repro 1895 carbine in 30-40, as I'm shooting the 30-06 version. the 30-40 will remain in the factory carton unfired.

I have a Browning 95 in 30-40. It is super smooth, accurate, and makes a fine deer rifle. Here's a little fork horn I got with it a few years back.

Re: Winchester Mod. 95 SRC in 30-40
I resisted this as long as I could - mine is 30-06 with a Williams FP71 rear sight and blade front sight replacing the bead -
Accuracy is good with those sughts - this is the target I used for zeroing those sights att 100 yards using a "fist rest" on the table.
Actually, I have several friends with the Winchester 95 in 30-40 Krag - all of whom really like that model and it was Teddy Roosevelt's favorite along with the 405 Winchester - he would take both to Africa for his hunts. I'm told the 30-40 had some heavy bullet loads in the past but the main advantage I see in the 30-06 now is a larger choice of bullet weights available for those of us who don't reload.

Thanks for the input. Anyone care to share their reloading information.
