range time with NKJ .357

Post by rjohns94 »

Every once in a while, there comes along a blend of desire, form, function, dreams and hope. After months of discussing, contemplating and waiting, my NKJ .357 arrived on election day. Two toned stainless - bright fixtures with bead blast finish, 20 inch barrel, WWG large loop, target rear peep, bright front sight., action job to complete it all. I carried the rifle around two weeks until I could finally get to the range. Tonight was range night for the NKJ.

I mentioned on another thread that I had picked up several shelves of ammo from my dealer for $20. In it were 17 boxes of 38/.357 ammo, split about half. (I also picked up 3 boxes of 30-06, two partials of 38 S&W, a box of 45-70, 3 of .308, 5 of .223/.556, 5 of .45acp, and 25 boxes of 12 gauge slugs, OO, OOO, OOOO, #4,#6, #2, #6, # 7 1/2, #9. ) tonight I packed my 17 boxes of .357 and .38 ammo off to the range for some "free" shooting.

Targets were put at 50 yards and the first 10 shots of .38 ammo were a bit to the right. Target sights were adjusted and brought them back to center on the next rounds. Shifted to .357 ammo and some more adjustments had offhand shots of around 4 inches for all 10 shots. The front bead is very visible, the action is flawless and the recoil was non-existant. I was truly impressed. The .357 has always sounded very sharp and high pitched crack to me. Not out of this carbine. The loads were quite compared to all my previous shooting experience. I went through about 7 different brands of ammo of different types of bullets, and weights, .38 and .357. I had one fail to feed, a full wadcutter .38 but that was assisted by a short stroke. I pushed the second round back into the magazine and the wadcutter fed right in.

When I finished shooting, most of the shots had covered the 4-5 inch center, a couple hundred rounds total.

this one is a keeper - I don't think you will see it for sale here on the classifieds anytime this life time.

Thanks Steve!!!!!!! Thanks to the forum for your recommendations!!!!

Gotta save a few more pennies. I figgure I could have one in trade for pulling one tanker load of fuel to Prudhoe. Another week or so till the wife is healthy enough to fend for herself and I can go back to work.

I'm glad you like your new rifle. A good 357 Magnum in carbine form can do a lot of work. I have a question.

What is the base rifle used in this project? Although the aftermarket work looks great and no doubt Steve is one of the best, I can't help but notice that the loading gate and opening look like someone carved it out with a worn out sawsall blade. I know it doesn't affect functioning, but it's kinda ugly. I'm not pointing this out to be a jerk (even though I am a jerk) but because all of the fawning responses seem to indicate a new benchmark in high quality, fit and finish. One that seems a tad lower than the days of yore. Okay, I'll go away now.

Idiot.

The base rifle is the Rossi/Puma with 92 action.

The scuffing on the loading gate happens, my little Marlin is showing "use" in that area

I'm guessing that Idiot is commenting on the difference between the scuffed High Shine Stainless and the dark matte stainless.

I'll take a pic of mine and post it later. Mine is not quite as dramatic a shine difference and thus doesn't look as "odd" as he sees it.

Looks good, congrats. I don't get on here as much as I used to, which front sight do you have?

here is the front sight. it is brass color and very visible in average light. I want to get a WWG flashlight holder for the barrel mag for a "tactical" upgrade.

Mike thats one fine rifle, I recently traded into a stainless Ruger SBH I owned once before, the guy had it bead blasted... it is really growing on me. A rifle to match just may be in my future.
