Do I need a 22 mag if I have a 32/20?

Post by Goat »

I think I would like to have a 22magnum but since I already have a Marlin 1894CL in 32/20 I do not know what I would do with the 22mag that I do not do already with the 32/20 . My cast bullet load consists of a 115gr. laser-cast bullet and Universal Clays powder. It consistantly shoots well under an inch at 50 yards and usually will go under an inch and a half at 100 yards. What will I gain with a lever 22 mag but another gun???

The only thing I can think of is convenience when out shooting /plinking in the field. You dont have to worry about loosing your BRASS. :D

I've had 32-20s since I was @ 18. Have four of them now but just got my first .22 Magnum.

It's not a levergun but a CZ 452 with a Mann.Stock.

What a tack driving ***! And Super fun to shoot.
1/2" groups @ 50 yds are easy!
It's a keeper for sure!

Gain? Gain? You're right just another gun. Do you need more of a reason :?: :?: :?:
Chuck is right too. You won't have to chase brass.
Ammo is getting more expensive by the month though. No longer $50-$60 bricks, most are double that anymore. :x

Based on my limited experience with the .32-20 and similar, no, you don't "need" a .22 WRFM... If not chasing brass is important, then go for it. I tell you, those .32-20 cases can go hiding in even short grass!

The 32-20 is a "30 caliber 22mag", but there is a tradeoff. The hassle and cost savings of reloading vs the cost of ready to use "premium" 22mag ammo......chasing brass excluded.

I had a CZ452 American before the cost of 22mag ammo made it too expensive, for target use. You will find on 99% of the Americans and Varmints that the barrel touches the right side of the stock. This is not a problem with 22LR, but the 22Mag will heat the barrel, expand against the stock, and accuracy is shot. I cleaned out the barrel channel, with a spark plug socket wrapped with 80 grit, worked it until I could slip a business card smoothly along the underside of the barrel, then re-sealed the bare wood. The last part is important. I was averaging 1" or better, 5-shot groups, 50% of the time, at 100yds using Winchester Supremes after cleaning out the channel.

Just my .02

You could always spring for a Winchester 61 chambered in 22mag if you have the $$$$.

In N.M. the .22mag is the poachers gun of choice, feeds many families yearly.
The local boys just get what is available & shoot whatever ammo is avalable, an end to a means.
Some of us have tweaked on them, and worked out good ammo/gun combos.
Some stories can never be told :(

yes because you're going to have a better trajectory. I can't say exactly, but I think you can go with the same hold out to 150 yards or more.

It has not worked that way for me, I guess it is a question of where to hit.

I have a .22 magnum, only because I can't find a .32/20 I can afford over here!

I reckon the heavier bullet of the 32/20 will make a difference at 100yds+.
What do you 32/20 hunters think? I want it for foxes and if I can't call 'em in close, 100yds is often the range I have to take my shot.
Whatever you do always give 100%........... unless you are donating blood.

I own both and feel they both have their roles in my collection. Although - I owned the 22mag before the 32/20.

The .32-20 is likely deer legal in places the .22 WRFM is not.

I'd rather get a .218 Bee - more of everything that the 22 mag offers.

I chomped at the bit for a long time over 22 Mag's, and I have both a 25-20 (actually 2) and a 32-20. But the appeal of a little 22 varmint plinker was just too much...then I got to weighing the wants and justification, and realized that what I really wanted was a .22 Hornet in an 1885 Uberti...So I called up Buffalo Arms and took care of that urge  I can't say enough about the Hornet single shot to replace the 22 Mag...cheaply reloadable and able to load up or down...
