Now THIS Is A 32-20

Post by Sixgun »

Dudes & fellow Shootists,
Remember about a month ago my son Sixgun Jr. bought this 1892 32-20 for $379? Anyway, he shipped it home from Colorado to me, here in Pa.The gun was a disaster but mechanically excellent. The receiver was heavily pitted, reblued, the last 10" of the octagon barrel was near round from what, I don't know, and most edges were rounded but......(once again) the wood was excellent as were all stampings.

I hate to do this but I gave the gun the "full Monte". I got the flats on the barrel octagon again. (only had to take off .015 from each flat) got all the pits out of the receiver and polished the whole thing up the old fashioned way. (about $40 worth of sandpaper in 5 different grits) The wood was excellent so I only had to strip it and add the proper Winchester stain and oil.

I gave the entire gun, sans lever, hammer, locking bolts, cartridge guides, carrier and forend cap my premier rust blue job, just like they did 100 years ago.

Then, after 40 hours of hard, tedious labor, I slapped it all together and added a new Marbles Tang Sight and gave it a workout today with 4 grains of Unique and a 115 NEI gas check bullet traveling 1150. To put it mildly, I was AMAZED :D :D :D After shooting 3 or 4 groups and knowing it was not a fluke, I got a fresh target and fired a group for score and pictures. This group was like the rest--as good as a regular bolt action rifle with a scope on it. All under two inches with my 54 year old eyes.

That boy of mine is gonna be one happy dude and as I am headed out there in a couple of weeks, I had better expect a coffee brought to my bed every morning, along with a five course breakfast. I will do NO driving and will relax in the passenger seat of his Dodge diesel. And at night, I will have my toes rubbed and my dirty underwear all washed each day. And the "racing stripes" had better be gone. :D -----------------Sixgun

Wish I could see the before pictures too! It sure is a nice looking gun now! I saw a 1892 that was a total reblue in a local shop last week for $229, in .32-20 or .38-40, with 24" octagon. Pretty ugly, and wood had extra varnish too, but it looked like it might be salvageable too. Maybe I better go back and look again! :D

I enjoy the patina/character look as much as the next guy, but I do like to see shiny stuff as well. Very nice. Patience is something that has to be learned, mostly, and I have a bit more learning to do before can acheive that kind of results.

WOW, what a fine looking '92. Need an '86 project? What exactly are "racing stripes"? Are those the same thing as "bacon strips"?

Thanks a bunch guys :D Like I said, I really don't like to take a Winchester down like that but this gun was in really sad shape. It was one of the worst I have even seen.

Its really not hard to do--just time consumming and lots of paying attention to detail. Patience is demanding but that only comes with age. I would be glad to offer anyone here what it takes to do the job :D -------------------------Sixgun
