What a cool idea! 8)

I have a bunch of my father's "American Rifleman" magazines from the early 60's. The prices just make you weep!

The only thing that keeps me from saying you are mean, wicked and evil through and through for posting that magazine and gun prices is the memory that in 1958, average wage was less than $1.00 per hour, and you could buy a new car for under $2,000.00 or a house for under $10,000. The average annual income was under $7,000, so the average Joe didn't have a lot of gun money laying about gathering dust then either.

Sure would have been nice to be a well-to-do gun crank in those days though wouldn't it.

Just curious, how many of you here were even alive in 1958? I wasn't even born until January of 1960.
And I thought I was old...

I was hatched in August of 52. That issue was out on my 6th birthday.

I was born in 1955 and already started collecting with a pair of cap guns... Of course we moved to WV and there everyone had a gun, even old spinster ladies.

Won't see much of this right now, will you?
b Chicago, Ill. Dr. Blaine Ramsay, 72,
opened the door to his consulting room
late at night to three visitors, two men
and a woman. One of the three said,
"This is a stick-up," and pushed Dr.
Ramsay back into a chair. They demanded
money, ordered Dr. Ramsay to
take his hands out of his pockets and
get busy. Dr. Ramsay did. He hauled
a .38 caliber revolver out of his pocket
and started shooting. One of the men,
an ex-convict, fell, badly wounded; the
other man and the woman fled. This is
not Dr. Ramsay's first experience in
such matters. In 1955, he killed another
ex-convict who tried to hold him up in
his office. Hold-up men should leave
Dr. Rarnsay alone, go to New York
where there's less chance of encounterng
an armed victim.
Sincerely,

Hobie

1939!

I remember buying the first issue of Guns magazine in 1955. I believe it was THE first gun-specific magazine to hit the newsstands. The only other available at the time was, of course,
The American Rifleman.

1941 for me. I bought a beautifull parker double barrel for $21 at a auction in 53 or 54. In 56 gave about $60 for a new win 94, also about $65 in 60 for a convertable single six etc. Like somebody said, I was getting $1 a hour in the late 50s working in a cannery. Also remember getting 65 cents a hour working in the feilds! BUT there was a lot of old classic guns around cheap that would now be worth a fortune! I remember buying a winchester 92 for $20 etc! Remember dad giveing $50 for a winchester 64 in .32 special to a guy that had just missed a buck with it! It really was better days then even with the money factor for the type guns I like, because what I like is all in the older classic lines from back then!
