OT Austen & Halleck ML purchase

Post by Paul Jenkins »

Gentlemen,
I just completed a very satisfying purchase from this site. Not a lever, but very pleasent
Pete,
I received the rifle at 2:00 pm, excitedly checked everything, cleaned and assembled. To say I'm happy is an understatement.
The rifle is like new and better than expected. You were also very generous with the extra accoutriments you included. I cast 35 hollow base minnies and have sabots and hornady HB HP Buffalo bullets and a possibles bag that will be delivered tomorrow. I'll range test it Wed. I'd go tomorrow but I have a golf outing. Thank you for taking good care of the rifle. I know I'm really going to enjoy it. I'm happy as a little boy on Christmas morning. THANK YOU !!! Great packing job too.

Always good to hear of satisfying transactions between members here. I certainly wouldn't be afraid to make a sight-unseen purchase from most anyone here.

Might I ask ?

Which A&H rifle did you purchase , one of the bolt action inlines or their Mountain Rifle ?

I like the inlines , but I always wanted one of the Hawken style they made
Parkers , Mannlicher Schoenauer’s , 6.5mm's and my family in the Philippines !

Gentlemen,
I bought a mountain rifle from Pete, I particulurly wanted a 1 in 28" twist barrel. I can't understand allowing inlines on an old timey hunt, but I'm open enough to say, the twist was within 1830's Inventiveness. Not really fair thinking. I just like traditinal styleing.

She'll like bullets better than patched balls but sounds like you are halfway down that path already. Good luck and have fun!

Always a good day at the range. Sorry , no pics. I did good, but not good enough to brag about. This was my first try with this rifle and have to admit shooting a flintlock requires more skill in the consentration and follow through. My best group was just under 3" / 50 yds. worst was 6"/ 50yds.
Bullets used / velocitys;
Lee modified HB conicle 335 gr. TC bore butter lube 80 grs. Swiss 2F 1705 FPS 6" gp.
Lead 250 gr RNFP/Knight sabot 80 gr. Swiss 2F 1535 FPS
Horn. 250gr. XTP/ Knight sabot 80 gr. Swiss 2F 1646 FPS 3" gp.
Lee 335 gr. HB conicle TCBB lube 70 gr. Swiss 2F 1279 FPS
Horn.230gr. XTP/ Knight sabot 70 gr. Swiss 2F 1289 FPS.
I had some Horn. 385 gr HBHP conicles I forgot I had. Gives me an excuse to try again in a few days.

I found the rifle to be most reliable and easier loading if I wiped the bore and picked the touch hole between shots. I took about 40 bullets with me, but only had time and energy for about 20 shots. I really ran out of 4F priming powder and found 2F to work ,but , ignition to slow.
