I bought this 1960 vintage 336SC from the local gunshop Friday. Yesterday I cleaned the bore and mounted an old 3-9 Simmons on it. I grabbed some lead reloads I had and took it out to sight it in. After getting a rough zero with the lead, I went back to 100 yards and fired 4 or 5 groups with some 200 grain core loks over H4895. What a suprise! This is typical of the groups it shot, keeping in mind that the center circle on this target is 1-5/16" in dia.
I had originally purchased this rifle to use as a project gun, but not anymore. It would be a travesty to change anything on it, what a hunter!
Great shooting! I have one that shoots very well also, that is destined to be my son-in-law's this season. Your's must be a deluxe model as I can see some checkering. -JDL
I wouldn't know the deluxe model from one that wasn't. What did they do differently? This one did have the white spacers and sling swivels. I honestly think the checkering was done by hand by somebody. It does have the raised cheekpiece (which I don't care for at all).
I'll will probably refinish the stocks and take the cheekpiece off at that time, as I don't have scopes on any of my lever rifles. I use them to check for bench accuracy like I did with this one, then, whenever I shoot with the open sights, if I miss, I know it was me.
Those .35's will group just about the same with a peep - my 1967 SC does.
You might want to reconsider your plan to refinish the stock, sanding off the checkering & removing the cheekpiece, if it's truely a Deluxe - since a Deluxe is worth a LOT more than even a SC, and tons more than an RC.
Fellow levergunner & collector, marlinman93, can better advise you than me, as to how to ascertain if your SC is a Deluxe, or not.
I can't remember if the barrel or the inside of the buttstock was specially marked with a "D",or not, or something else.

Thanks, everyone for keeping me from altering my carbine. The guys on the collector's forum told me the same thing, DON'T TOUCH IT!
I appreciate your help. I'm now very proud of my acquisition. I figured that the checkering was done by hand. But I never thought they ever did that at any factories. I could tell it wasn't done by machine, because it wasn't as consistent as machine checkering and I could definitely tell it wasn't pressed.
