Bore Snake....how do you use it??

Post by Lobo »

Hi All,

I bought a Bore Snake for my 45 cal pistol....the instructions say run it through until the bore is clean! No solvent???

Anyone know the "proper" way to use one of these things????

I put solvent on the brush part and run it through.

I don't use solvent on my boresnakes.

I put CLP just in front of the brush and at the very tail of the swab.

Usually takes less than 3 runs to get a shiny bore.

I own one, but never use it. I bought it to stick in my back pack while hunting for emergency purposes. I would put solvent on it I guess as they can be washed. I just ran into something that looks better, an Otis cleaning system. It is a long skinny plastic coated cable with a slot on one end to hold a patch. Inexpensive and easy to use. Comes with a small bottle of cleaning solution in a nice little package.

Greetings,

I use bore snakes in tandem with usual methods. I find that the bore snake is best for mop up and not so much for heavy cleaning.

For hunting where you might accidently stick your muzzle into the ground.... (yes, it can happen if you trip, etc.) I carry one of the screw-together cleaning rods - that way, you've got something to poke the dirt or mud out of the barrel with...

I clean my pistols about once per month (shoot 20-30 rounds through each weekly) and at least one rifle each week. I don't detail rifles often but, use the bore snake every week - spray "Bore Cleaner" down the bore - let sit a few minutes, then run the bore snake through. I have friends who are "anal" (their description) about cleaning their guns after every trip to the range but, I have other things to do and am not sure they are right.

YMMV

I definately like these, but they are nowhere near as good as the Otis system. The Otis system even has an obstruction remover in it to clear a barrel. The kit I have is about the size of a "snuff can" and about twice as thick. It very easily fits in a day pack or on a belt with you not knowing it's there and plenty of room left over. Price as best I can remember was $50 bucks.

I use one for after session cleaning. A little drizzle of Kroil or Rem oil right down the barrel and hit it with the snake. I go after things with a rod and brush ever couple of sessions. Bore snakes work real nice on shotguns... when I was shooting skeet often I'd give a swipe or two before rounds... made real cleaning a whole lot easier.

I clean .22s with the snake all the time... gets the worst out and I think they are a little easier on the wear points that a rod. Try to clean from the action as the string could wear the muzzle if you dont get a good straight pull.

If you shoot a lot in one session a good brush and rod are still needed.

The first bore snake I bought was for a Rossi .357 carbine, I found it worked very well and bought a couple more for other guns. I use a little CLP when putting the guns away for a while.

I too hit the barrel with CLP and then run a bore snake through, I like how they work.
