Most of the 'Yellowstone Bison Victims' deserve it - not this guy...!
.
Hard to see that this guy was provoking or getting too close, or doing anything at all wrong...

I wonder what would have happened if he had a 454 Casull pistol and tried (and with luck was successful) to put one in the brain...???

I have been flipped in the air before on cattle ranches, but I was in my late teens early 20's. I sure the hell wouldn't want to be his age and take a hook like that.

Re: Most of the 'Yellowstone Bison Victims' deserve it - not this guy...!
My sister found the news story.
A grandfather was seriously injured and hospitalized in critical condition after a bull bison charged him and tossed him 8 feet into the air at the Bridge Bay Campground in Yellowstone National Park. The violent attack was triggered when a passing truck agitated the bison, causing it to charge the man and his grandson.
The Attack Details
The 65-year-old victim and his grandson were walking through the campground. Witnesses noted they were keeping a safe and respectful distance from the large bull bison. However, the animal had already been acting aggressively, charging at a group of children and a passing white pickup truck. After the truck drove off, the agitated bison shifted its attention to the grandfather and grandson. The grandson managed to dart away, but the bison caught the grandfather, hooked him with its left horn near the hip, and threw him into the air.
The Rescue and Injuries
Following the flip, the bison stood over the injured man. Bystanders—including professional photographer Mike Macleod who captured the video—ran at the animal, jumping and shouting to distract it so the man could be safely reached.
Emergency crews responded quickly, and the man was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for serious internal injuries, including a broken hip. According to updates from the victim's grandson, the man was left with "pretty significant injuries" and remained in critical condition.

They were wrong.Witnesses noted they were keeping a safe and respectful distance from the large bull bison.
The bull gets to decide what's, "safe and respectful."
And it will decide whether or not it's annoyed.
Best of luck to the gent - I hope he recovers.

When Mrs. YK and I were at the Grand Canyon (south rim) this past May we went walking through some of the vendors set up around the visitors center. I was a little ahead of my wife, and turned around when I noticed she had stopped to look at some jewelry (go figure

Wild animals need to be given space. Even a deer can hurt you if you get close enough.

So for us uneducated in the American Bison, just what is a safe distance?stretch wrote: ↑Sun Jul 12, 2026 8:59 pmThey were wrong.Witnesses noted they were keeping a safe and respectful distance from the large bull bison.

I personally don't think they were wrong, and the grandfather and grandson were doing everything right, yet the bull charged them anyway. Had they been a 1/4mile away he may still have gone after them since he was already agitated. Is there some set distance we know a buffalo wont charge when he's already worked up?
They did everything right by keeping away once they saw the buffalo, and kept moving to get back to their camp site. The grandpa was simply trying to get him and his grandson far away as possible, and made no effort to even slow down or stop once they saw this buffalo. Unlike many people I've seen trying to approach buffalo or elk in Yellowstone who deserve whatever they got by doing so.

The recommendation is 25 yards but should be much farther June thru September because they're in the rut season. This bison had been aggressive to a group of teenagers moments before. They ran off and did try and warn other people in the campground.
I've seen tourist approach bison herds and even send children to stand by them for pictures! For the most part they're fairly docile..but not always.

If the bison was left to rolling in the dust none of this would have happened. But when some idiot drove by honking his horn he caused the bison to get ticked off, and he went for the closest target he could see. They were well away from the bison until that idiot honked his horn, so he's the one to blame.jkbrea wrote: ↑Wed Jul 15, 2026 11:52 am The recommendation is 25 yards but should be much farther June thru September because they're in the rut season.
