Winged my Chrony

Post by mickbr »

Took out the rear screen on the old Prochrono, it was no match for a 240 gn xtp at about 1800fps from the Rossi. Still not sure how I only hit the rear screen and not the front one but anyway, apart from flipping the chrony off the bench, its still working. The rear screen broke but I found I can tape it together. I assume if its still giving readings the screen is doing its job, what job is that anyway?
I might try and calibrate it versus another chrony. Never done this before btw, range 5 yards too..
A gunstore I used to visit used to ask for shot up chronies and he would mount them around the walls of his shop on head mount plaques. :D

The world is split between those that have shot their Chrony... and those that haven't... YET! I, myself, am still in the latter group... but every range day, I fear I'll join the first!

If I shoot my current chrony I'm in trouble, using one of the Garmin jobbers.

Well, I have never shot a chrony. Now three on the other hand.

I had an old Pro Crono for 30 years. It only ever got hit by a stray gas check, and survived with only cosmetic damage. It just wouldn't quit. I ended up giving it to a buddy when I bought a Garmin. Turned out to be a great decision. Don't have to worry about shooting this one since it sits on the bench next to the gun.

.
I made a wooden base for mine and used a old steel plate to make this shield. So far I've not had any strikes other than intentionally shooting with a 7mm mag just to see if it would indeed divert the bullet, which it did (due to the low angle - the steel is ordinary soft steel), and one time my son hit the plate shooting a 22LR NAA Mini Revolver. Of course it only protects the body of the chronograph but that's the part you can't replace.

The rods and screens are basically set up so direct sunlight getting in to the detectors doesn't mess things up but sometimes they'll without those parts depending on cloud cover and angle of the sun.

Living in Western WASHington, i often shoot with a cloud cover. When its cloudy I put 10" wooden dowels in the base to guide the setup so the bullets pass over the center of the chrony and the front sensor is aligned with the rear. My understanding is that the bullet casts a shadow in the screen or the cloudy background that is picked up by the sensors. If the sky is clear , the sensors don't pick up the shadow without the screens.

Shot one once. No follow up shots required!

In my defense, it was really asking for it!

Bought one to replace it, but had some trouble getting readings sometimes, so I got an Athlon. Money well spent, and works at any time of day. In any light. Very small and portable too.

How I shot one was by not realizing that a Sabot from a muzzleloader would do it. Took out the L.E.D. screen with the plastic sabot.

Sounds like you really keep your chronies guessing. :D

I've "yet" to shoot one, but witnessed a friend shoot one in an archery shop with an arrow. It made quite the racket and got everyone's attention in the store!

My first shot with my brand new Chrony was dead center on the screen :o , I had forgotten the muzzle is lower than the sights and I took a fine bead at the bottom of the V. Fortune was with me as I was shooting my Daisy BB gun as it taught me a valuable lesson and there wasn't any damage. :D And BTW that Daisy was the most consistent thing I have ever fired over the Chromy at 325 fPS.
