Sometime back I purchased a Remington Rolling Block Model 1891 target pistol that had been rebarreled and numerous upgrades done to it, including a .22 Short barrel by famous maker H.M. Pope. The barrel is threaded for a silencer, which at the time would have been one of Maxim's brand new inventions he came out with in 1902!
I really wanted to find a papered Maxim silencer, but many were destroyed or tossed out at the first NFA back in 1934. Some were also hidden away in hopes the 1934 Act might be repealed; so not many owners papered them. I told friends I wanted an original Maxim, but the chances were slim to none. Then recently a friend asked if I might be interested in a factory Maxim cutaway salesman's sample? An old friend of his had it stashed away thinking it might have been illegal, but my friend told him it was perfectly legal to own or sell. So after I told him I wanted it a deal was struck that made us both happy.
When I got it the baffles were full of lint likely from a sock drawer or storage place. It took a long time with a dental pick, and some wire to clear out each baffle, but eventually I got it nice and clean. The outside looked a bit rough as the bluing was flat black from age and some handling marks. I carefully cleaned the outside with 4/0 steel wol and polished the bluing with Flitz Metal Polish. Wiped it down with Old West Snake Oil, and it really came out looking nice! It will be a nice display piece to go with my Pope-Rolling Block target pistol!
Thanks guys!
Here's an old advertisement showing Maxim's factory cutaway in a drawing. Baffles look a bit different than the real Maxim baffles. Maybe a design change along the way somewhere?
