A good friend gave my grandsons a Savage Camper .. over & under .22 Long Rifle / 20 ga. break-open.

Has storage in the stock for extra ammo

I took it to the Range yesterday and sighted it in at 25 yards. This is the best 3 shot group of the day. I was aiming at sideways V and hit just a bit right.

I shot a few shots at some cardboard with the 20 ga. and dove loads to see the pattern. The trigger pull on this gun is excellent!

I have an old pre-68 Model 24 in 22/20 ga. For rabbits it's one of my favorites. A very useful gun, works great whether they're running or sitting still.

When I was a 5th grader my good friend Les who lived on the neighboring ranch got diagnosed with Leukemia. As consolation hIs folks got him a little Savage over/under 22/410 and all the ammo he wanted. We took great advantage of this wonderful bounty and I was most envious of Les's good fortune. Wonderful bunny blaster and we had a lot of bunnies along Arizona's Hassayampa River in those days.

Savage must have made a billion of some version of that gun over the years...

When my son was starting to shoot with me (something like 22 rifle age 4, 22 pistol age 7, 357 Mag levergun age 9, Mini-14 age 10, AR-15 age 11, 1911 age 12, 44 Mag Marlin age 13, 12 gauge pump age 14...), he liked to shoot ALL kinds of guns, which I appreciated, but usually the young'uns like the bigger bang stuff.

However, when he was around 15, I picked up a Savage 410/22LR that was the older kind where the barrels are sweated together versus apart like the most recent ones, mostly as a sort of nostalgic 'collector' gun for myself, my son put down the Mossberg 12 gauge, and put down the AR and Mini-14, and started taking the 410/22 everywhere (on our property) to practice with, and to go after squirrels and rabbits.

Now he's over 30, and has some income, and builds himself fancy long-range bolt-actions, and ARs, but.... he still uses that good old 410/22 all the time.

A buddy of mine had a 22/20 ga,one day we were rabbit hunting and he shot at a bunny and missed as it ran. He dejectedly opened up the gun just right and ejected the 20 ga hull straight up. That hull must have gone 15 feet up. Of course me being a scattergun junkie shot his hull in the air!

This one does not have an ejector. It has an extractor.

There used to be lively discussions and information posted on the diverse models produced over the decades.

There is a way to get into an over-under 30-30 that is reasonably sight regulated by starting with the very rare 30-30over 20 or 12 bore and having a 30-30 insert made for the shotgun barrel.

the models with the .22 hornet or 30-30 over 20 bore were occasionally in stock at and could be ordered from our local otasco store circa 1980 but were way beyond my parent's financial means. I mowed grass and grew tomatoes & gathered pecans but a h&r single 20 was the best I could do.

I think I met him (a.k.) once in the gloom of mister richardson's rock garden. If I remember he introduced himself as either lester or leonard, weinstein or weintraub or something similarly sounding.

i had one of those 24-C campers and found a folding stock [ Sarco had them, WWII surplus supposedly, for $4.99 still sealed in its package ] and installed it. well...... my son just immediately appropriated that gun !





he still has it and doubt he will ever let it go !

i found another 24-C eventually but have never seen another folding stock for sale. wish i had bought several of those stocks !

the savage 24s are interesting and useful.

supposedly the folding stock was made to use with short barreled savage shotguns, maybe issued as survival tools by aircrews in WWII. Sarco had them advertised for years, in these hermetaically sealed paper-like pouches that were foil lined. if finally bought one and had it for years ,long before i got the savage camper

I am now 75 years young, and in the 1960s and 1970s, my youngest brother had one of these, and in various moves over the years, that gun got stolen.
My brothers and i over the years have always wanted one, and last year, i picked up the 22 mag/20 guage.

i think it would make a good all around truck gun, and trail gun.
