Anything is possible. If you aren't adverse to it A good smith could attach a mount to the side plate. This would require D&T.

I did see one mount on a pre angle eject 94 that sat a bit higher than usual the bottom was designed to deflect the brass out to the side. This still used a side mount, but positioned the scope inline with the bore. Probably a one off custom job though.

You can put a red dot in the barrel dovetail with a Turnbull mount. We have 2 of them, and they work great.

.
The little Burris Fastfire is an example of how lightweight the new optics can be - even with a high-recoiling firearm a dovetail rear sight mount has plenty of meat to handle the inertial stress on a lightweight sight like that.

It's nice to see 'old guns' not be consigned to safe-queen status just because their owners don't have youthful eyes and vision. Especially since it can be done with minimal to no permanent alteration of the firearm.

They really do work well. I have one on a 94 Trapper in .44, also.
The carbine in the above picture was a project "Trapper" I built for my dad's birthday in about 1990. The receiver dates to 1899. It was returned to the factory for a rebarrel in the 1930s I'd guess. It's chambered in 32WS. When dad was in his late 70s he was starting to struggle with the 66 Lyman and the front sight being so close on the 16" barrel. As a solution, I installed the Turnbull mount and FF3. At 84, he is still using this setup.

I think thats the way i will go thought about puttig a rail on barrel secured to dovetail .This will not alter it much at all and I get to shoot this awesome rifle .I think a green dot will work work best I have trouble seeing red dots .
I WANT to get this original 1886 4590 checked out before I shoot it but it looks new even though it was made in 1894 .I love these old guns and want to be able to hunt with them .

Turnbull makes a red dot mount that attaches to two existing holes in the side of the receiver. Just put one on my Japchester 45-90 a couple months ago with a Burris red dot. 3 moa is a bit big for a rifle but it works well.
