Doc, just read a thread about tapping Oregon bigleaf maples for syrup. Works the same in Oregon as it does in the Upper Midwest and New England if you tap when the temperature is right.

Nectar of the gods

I have a tablespoon of local very dark maple syrup every morning in my oatmeal.

I don't care for the latest grading system for maple syrup. To me it all tastes burnt!
I've seen a couple local places that are tapping hickory's for syrup, not had a chance to try it though.
I knew a guy that had miles of tubing on different properties, he turned into a covid statistic, bodied from the second infection.

:D I accidentally tapped one shellbark hickory with a couple sugar maples the first year I tapped. Couldn't tell any difference though.

The boxelder (ash-leaved maple) can even be tapped but it is less concentrated - five gallons of sap makes about a half-pint versus a whole pint for a sugar maple.

The farm I grew up on had a decent sugarbush, 800 galvanized buckets . A three hundred gallon sled pulled by a team of Belgian Horses. Walter was the Horse Man and Norm liked to use a tractor to pull the sled. One muddey Sunday Norm got the tractor and sled stuck deep in the woods and a heated exchange ended when Walter unhooked the sled got the tractor out and came back a long while later with the team to finish the job. pretty exciting for a twelve year old. They never tapped trees until Washington's Birthday. I had it made as a Kid.
