So after that Bondi shooting the govenment went all out with a media compaign attacking gun owners. Leglisation rushed in just before Christmas. Gun ownership still allowed but the Fed wants only 4 guns per person for recreational shooting, permission for 10 if you are part of shooting/target sports.
Australia has 7 states and territories. Four have folded to the feds wishes. Two have refused(one being my home state , Queensland), one other state is on the fence.
The issue with this country is this attack comes from both the conservative and liberal parties, all voted for the bans at Fed. Gunowners have no friends here, the media is left wing as well. Im wishing I hadnt come back now, but had family committments.
Anyhow the amount of good guns going to the chompers is going to be galling to see. There will be a lot of selling off collections to the freer states but we cant take them all. A lot of collectibles, safari rifles, fine double rifles and drillings will perish. And I wish we could send all the old 1892's and 1873's back to the US. Australia imported large numbers in the late 1800's/early 1900's for our own frontiers. 1892's were in fact often owned by early state militias, police and prisons up until WW2 and are now used as regular hunting peices or collectibles. No one is going to bother trying to salvage these, they will get crunched.
Its certainly put the country on its head. As well as the gun restrictions the government rolled out "hate speech" laws like the Uk has at the same time. You can do 12 years in prison for onine social media posts. Again both our conservative and liberal parties joined forces for the vote to pass. Talk about colluding to oppress us. The only good thing is the reaction appears to have almost destroyed one of these parties, multipe ministers have walked out, and a third party, a smaller group who is pro-democracy and never had much traction, is now polling at record levels.
Personally I think this whole thing is a work. Too many countries eg in Europe going through similar immigration crisis/goverment crackdowns right now. Covid changed how the world runs, it never went normal again. Someone higher up, bankers, UN are calling the shots with we smaller countries at least. Its the only explanation I can see.
Sorry for the long rant, had to let it out. I'll keep fighting for my state at least, glad we didnt fold( yet)

.
The line in the sand really needs to be the concept of "allowed"...
The US got it right (although there is still pressure to ban guns).
The ONLY acceptable circumstance is that the CITIZENS have the right to keep and bear arms (especially 'military style assault weapons', which are the only politically-significant firearms). Then the CITIZENS 'allow' selected government entities to own specific firearms, with specific features, and specific ammunition.
The notion that the GOVERNMENT should be able to 'allow' citizens to own guns is completely inappropriate - citizens must be in control, and their only limitation be a difficult-to-modify constitution that cannot be changed on the spur of a moment.

I have been watching what's been going on as a few friends I worked with in the Middle East live there. Sorry that I have no good news or advice to give you.
