bought a 1957 Winchester Model 94 30-30

Post by EdinCT »

Well, I had a moment of weakness today and saw this 30-30 used but not abused on the rack. I looked at the price and it was 700.00 I thought I sold my first 30-30 for 80 bucks around 1975 and it wasn't a pre 64 so I guess the price was fair in my mind so I bought it. My wife said to buy yourself something when I went in and I did.
It is in Rhode Island which will hold it for a week because My CT pistol permit isn't valid there.
Lord willing I will pick it up next Wednesday and try to get pictures posted after that.

My background check ended up in California instead of CT! I had to fill out the paperwork again and wait another 7day waiting period. But I picked it up today and ran some Hoppes through it. Then installed the Williams 5D receiver sight and removed and blanked the rear sight. I took it out behind the barn and sighted it in at 65 yards in a few shots. Last three hit a 2inch group dead center of a 3inch bull with 170gr Remington's. I also shot a few Speer 150gr and Hornady 180gr round nosed loaded over IMR 4064. It really liked the 180gr load but I doubt it would expand much if at all. For senior citizen eyes I'm happy! The only thing I noticed after shooting the ivory bead has been broken off and it has white paint on it. I am pretty sure I have a Marbles bead around from when I put an Ashley front on my Dad's 94 rifle years ago.

1957 was a good year for Winchester ´94's... at least, that's the year my Grandpa's rifle was built. My brothers and I are now the caretakers of the old levergun and I've taken more deer with it than Grandpa did. :) Enjoy that old piece of levergunning goodness. I run mine with a 170 gr JFP over a a snort of IMR powder. Need to find some more projectiles one of these days and load up another batch of ammo.

Can't beat them.

My first rifle is one made in 59. My dad bought it for me with his birthday money when I was in junior high. It looked new when I got it. It still looks pretty good considering all the miles I've carried it. I carried it this season matter of fact.

My 94 was made the year I was born, but it is not a .30WCF caliber. .32 WCF.

I gave my 32 Special to one of my sons, It was a fantastic cast bullet shooter and I really missed it, I ordered a Lee 170 FP mold and if this new rifle shows promise I will find a Lyman 311041.
I also bought a Williams 5d in case the opens aren't workable for me.

Looks real nice, and at a fair price I think too.

My 30-30 Model 94 was made in 1941. It's one of my favorite rifles and travels with me often. However, it was my dad's gun, and I worry that if I have to use it defensively in any way it's gonna sit in an evidence room for God knows how long. I'm looking at the Rossi Model 95 as a replacement for it and keep the Winchester at the house.
