35 Cal swaged boolits for hogs?

Post by drone »

Bit of Practical advice please, I'm getting a 35 cal and bought some run out 200 grain gc swaged boolits. They are gonna be boiled in dishwasher detergent then powder coated.
The lead is pure lead and I'm really downloading them to get some trigger time but are swaged boolits any good for medium sized hogs? Image shows a handfull.

I suppose it depends on where you hit them. I have killed a bunch of hogs with a .22 for example.

.357 will definitely do the job.

Those are interesting bullets that look like they want to cut nice holes. Powder coating will of course help you with the leading issues associated with pure lead, but I still would not push them too fast, lest expansion comes at the cost of penetration. Look forward to hearing your results in the field. 8)

It's no a 357, it's 358 with a 30/06 parent case.
The shop owner who swaged them has used them up to 1300 or so fps. He advises the gas check keeps the bore smut free.
I'm not restricted to them though, this mold came in the post today, 220grain HP

My guess too.
Lots of load data available.
As long they’re a couple thou over bore diameter and the barrel is free of constrictions and not bell mouthed (muzzle diameter larger than breech) you can run them well past 1400 fps.
If your accuracy gets to what you trust hit a few water jugs an maybe a roast. See what you think.
I prefer a hard cast wide flat nose for hunting. If that bullet was hard cast at say 2000 fps mv it would run stem to stern on an elk sized animal with a 3/4” hole you could eat right up to.
My guess is with soft lead you’ll still get well into the vitals maybe even through a shoulder though my experience with soft lead is limited to a couple of whitetail muzzle loaded 50 cal ball.
Kind regards,
Tycer

Yeah, 35 Whelen, nearly last itch I gotta scratch in my "wants" list of calibers. just 25/35 and 219 zipper to go.
