Of course in Los Angeles, a retired nurse without a criminal record probably CAN'T get a 'permit', yet a criminal who ignores the law will carry whatever weapon they want (...of course 'it was only a knife... ).

I hate to point the obvious out, but there seems to be a common theme developing the past few decades...

Doc, I hate to get teste but hear it comes. A retired nurse in Los Angeles can get a concealed carry permit. My older sister, a retired nurse, has one. In Los Angeles a retired water guru can get a permit. Heck, I have had a permit for DECADES. Before people speak about the conditions in an area in which they do not live and have no direct knowledge, please think.

Please note, it isn't always easy to get a permit, but it is possible. The politicians don't like it. The top law enforcement folks that approve permits, in some areas don't like it. But as Los Angeles County recently found out dragging their feet has consequences.

In case you are wondering just exact how direct my knowledge is, the stabbing took place a few mile to the west of my house. Heck, if I look up on the peninsula, I can see where it took place.

Thanks for clarifying the LA situation, but, I did say 'probably', and it does sound like that even though it is officially listed as a 'shall issue' state, the effect comes out as more of a 'may issue' than 'shall issue' situation; I'm glad she could at least theoretically get a permit.

Even though I've never lived in California, it either seems more difficult to get a CCW license there, or there may just not be very many people interested in doing so, for over nine times as many people in Indiana have CCW licenses, despite having less than a fifth the population, making it seem about 45 times easier to get a CCW here. According to the USCCA (links on state names follow, but maybe they are incorrect), one out of every six (1.12M/6.7M) citizens in Indiana has a CCW (plus Constitutional Carry now), versus only one out of every three-hundred and thirty (121K/39.9M) citizens in California, so I guess I should just be glad we are lucky here in that sense.

Of course I'm redneck enough to feel like there shouldn't be any 'permit' involved anyway.

Lots of common themes, but there sure seem to be a bunch of people with 'priors' who for whatever reason are roaming the streets instead of being in prison. And that's not just in LA but is apparently everywhere - we even see it in the redneck midwest... :|

As you surmised, a lot of folks just don't consider getting a permit. Heck, it is a predominately liberal state.

But I whole heartedly agree everyone in the US should have the right (oh wait we do) to own and carry firearms without governmental interference. Firearms restriction in California took decades to reach a zenith. But the pendulum is swing back the other way. The lack of adequate and effective policing, and your aforementioned catch and release situation in criminal incarceration have started pushing that pendulum.

I've mentioned before a neighbor that had a home invasion, for which the LAPD took hours to respond. She now has a firearm, and I know she knows how to use it, as does her husband. They both also have carry permits. I pretty much think she dared the L. A. police chief to deny it. Not even he is that brain dead.
