The BIG crayon box…. Good philosophy…

This was good. On life philosophy.

The story reminded me that in my own life at one point, I actually DID get the 128 box, in med school, but not to draw pretty pictures. Instead I used them to take a biochem exam (it is really hard to draw hemoglobin’s molecular structure in crayon, by the way). We would have these four-hour exams that were awful, and I used them to make a point. The instructor fell for the trap, pacing around proctoring the exam, and kept pausing behind my desk while classmates nearby snickered, knowing something was up. Finally he couldn't stand it, and blurted out "Ok, I know I'm going to regret asking, but what's with the Crayolas...?"

"I just felt it appropriate to use a medium commensurate with the intellectual quality of the exam, sir..."

There were 19 in the class. At midterm there were two of us with D's and seventeen with F's. I made straight A's in Pharmacy School and had all sorts of chemistry: two semesters of regular, four semesters of organic; two of physical chemistry, and four of biochemistry. The other ‘D-student’ had a PhD in biochemistry. So it was clearly a mind-game or so-called weed-out class, where they try to intimidate you into quitting. I did wind up with an A eventually, and all but one kid passed, but the mind-gaming was ridiculous.
