Absolutely! The original is still the best! Unless you have a long trip on the highway ahead.
My old 59 wasn't much better in that regard. I still find the TJ the best balance of Jeep originality and drivability on modern roads.

Drove those in the Army/National Guard. We did go on long convoys. One problem was drivers trusted them too much and flipped a couple. We also had 3/4 tons and 2 1/2 tons, one of those flipped, killed two guys and sent another 10 to the hospital.

My brother had a 59 CJ-5 years ago. I remember pulling a 2 horse trailer the 180 miles from the Silver City area to Albuquerque in the middle 60s. The weight of the two horses and trailer was like the tail wagging the dog. We made it but it was dangerous as heck. What a nightmare! Not something that little jeep was made for.

That's what is amazing about the old Jeeps. They didn't do anything that they weren't overloaded, overstressed, or over something. Yet they kept right on going.

I never owned a Jeep but my series one LandRovers were fun and easier to find over here.

I had a Land Rover dealer as a customer. The mechanics were well fed and kept food on the table for their families. They were grateful that the new Land Rovers were so unreliable. I was shocked to see that some had price tags exceeding $200K. The dealer was in Santa Fe where the source of wealthy people who cared about status symbols but not about quality seemed endless.

I always thought the old ones were pretty cool.

The old series 1s were kind of scarce here, but they were around. I've never had the chance to drive one, but wouldn't pass it up. They were an awesome rig. Just like the early FJ40 Land Cruisers.

Jay, what is a series 1?

The old original model. They were about the same wheelbase as an early Jeep. Very square with an aluminum body. The grill was recessed in between the leading edge of the fenders. You always see them in movies of Africa or the middle east.
It's said that it's the first motor vehicle seen by one third of the earth's population. They were introduced in 1948 I think.

Yes they were born the same year as me and the first prototype was built on a Jeep chassis.

Okay, you were referring to Land Rovers. The '60s books by Joy and George Adamson and the movie, Born Free had lots of references to the old Land Rovers; the 24 volt electrical systems, all-aluminum bodies and the ability to cross deep rivers.

I enjoy watching you tube videos of flat fender Jeeps off-roading. Sometimes an early Land Rover joins in as well. My brother had an old CJ-2A Jeep for years and I sure wish he'd have let me know that he got tired of it; he sold it for $600. Darn it!

When I was a gamekeeper I took my 1st wife and her sisters family down to the local pub in my stripped down 1950 Land rover as I pulled into the carpark we were cheered by a crowd of drinkers who came over to see the series one, not often did I get such a reception just going for a pint....
Sadly this ain't mine but it's how I like 'em ...........................in the summer

Pretty cool buddy!
I was taking the boys to school one morning in April, and it was snowing hard. As we pulled into the high school road there was a Jeep pulling in from the other direction. It had no top or doors and a girl was driving it.
I said, "You see that boys? THAT'S a girl you marry right there!"

I'm pretty sure my youngest boy did. His wife is a ticket for sure.

Little work in the garage this morning. My JD jet kit came for the DRZ yesterday, so I pulled the carb this morning and did some jetting work. Biggest PIA carb to pull I've ever done. On the plus side, it seems to be pretty spot on now.
Of course, I simply HAD to go for a ride. I ran out through the Burrill woods and the Notch. Then rode to camp to see if it's drying up.

Yeah, pulling that carb is a major job. I replaced the screws holding the bowl onto the carb with stainless steel allen head screws so I could loosen the clamps, rotate the carb and have access to the bottom of the carb and not mess up the stock screw heads.

It looks like the road to camp isn't even muddy. I'm glad you had a good ride. Thanks for the pictures.

I did the same thing to both the TW and the DRZ. As usual, 3 came out but one rounded out. Even with a JIS screwdriver. I got it by tapping it with a arrogant idiot punch.
I unbolted the top of the subframe and pulled it down and back to gain some room. It's still miserable.

Hey, I just realized I couldn't call a tool by its name in my last post. You've got to be kidding me?

I remember trying to write out p r i c k punch last year and was amused at the result. When a screw threatens to round out on me I put a dab of grinding compound on the screwdriver tip and it frequently allows me to remove it.

That's a good idea Walt! I've got some with needle nose vise grips, some with a punch, some by going a slot. Whatever gets it done Haha. I'll remember your trick though, and add it to the list.

Well Walt there was at one time an ongoing battle between I’ll say it the way I want to and a moderator who deleted two of these many page threads over the issue. OW and gk will recall that. Included was you might call a personality conflict between two members that no longer participate. The program changing various words like bastardized file was kind of a half measure attempt somewhat because a number of other members did not want to linked to a forum where that was taking place and some of that was through complaints behind the scenes that were not aired on the open forum.

Thinking back to Campfire and Gunroom there may have been half a dozen involved.

Yeah. Oh well. In a world where nothing lasts, I'd say a thread sneaking up on 300 pages ain't bad.
It's certainly changed, but what doesn't? Our numbers have certainly shrunk. Gunny is still on the forum, but doesn't post in this thread since the whole 25-20 debacle. I didn't know if maybe he'd come back since Six left, but I guess not. At least he still talks to me, which is more than I get from Six.
I try and get here every day, but I must say it's been frustrating the last several days with the inability to log in or even bring up the page. Hopefully that is rectified.

Six still posts on the Colt forum, but I've got no response there, or on FB either. I must of offended him somehow. I made several attempts with no response, so I just stopped.

Saw there was a bombing in Palm Springs. I was right by there last week going to golf.

Back in 74 the IRA blew up two pubs in Birmingham one of which I used to drink in, 21 people died and many more were injured. My Irish Catholic friends were disgusted by that. As you say you never really know

When I first moved south in 89 findings a pub that served decent beer seemed impossible that was so disappointing I nearly gave up going to pubs still wouldn't blow one up though. Nowadays pubs are struggling to survive and every year more and more close down and it's rare I that I go to a pub now as the ones that are left are more like restaurants and coffee shops (don't get me started on frothy coffee), you can't even smoke which annoys me even though I gave up smoking years ago...

That's sad buddy. When I think of England, that's what I picture. Little pubs in a small village or in the countryside. Probably from watching An American Werewolf in London back in the day.
We have have a lot of knockoff Irish pubs here. Like everything, I'm sure if you've been in a real one, they are a sad joke. We have pub here in town. It's down on the river way up on a rock cliff and was a brewery way back in the towns infancy. It's a really cool looking place.

Jay that does look mighty cool I love riverside pubs usually with a beer garden where you can sit outside and enjoy your beer. I used to live near a pub on a Hampshire chalk stream with really big Trout that learned to take titbits that the folks threw in just to see them.

The Old Mill pub has a deck around the 2 sides toward the river. It's nice to sit out there in the summer. The inside was left as it looked in the old days. The old post and beams are exposed. It encompasses 2 floors and is open in the middle. Very cool old building.
When we had the big flood back in 87, the lower right corner was taken out. The bricks were patched back in and in a good picture you can see the different color of bricks.
