Winchester 1892, 44-40, 1912 era.

Just found this nice, refinished Winchester model 92, 44-40 rifle at a gun show. I looked at it, passed on it, and started to drive home. After a mile, I made a “U” turn and went back and bought it.

It was made in 1912 and whoever refinished it did an excellent job. I just bought a Miroku 44-40 SRC, and sold it after a month, unfired. This is a much nicer gun than the Winchester/Miroku was.

I got it for the same price I paid for the Miroku which was much cheaper than an unrestored one.



Maybe someone can tell me what these stamps are (restorer or Winchester stamps?).



The only thing that looked a little odd was this rear sight. I may change it to a more original looking sight.

The PW in the oval is a proof applied by Winchester. They started doing this around 1905 +/-.
The sight looks like a later 3c from a 94. Of course, a plethora of sights were available from the factory on order. The standard would be a semi buckhorn rifle sight (forget the code) with a slider and set screw insert.

The sight is correct for vintage , the later 22H with short 3C elevator is thicker in front of rear sight leaf.

Winchester refered to this sight as sporting rear sight.

You can see the 22 H Later version is thicker at leaf than the older Sporting Rear.

Just tried some 44-40 snap caps. The rifle feeds very smoothly with a great trigger pull.
