Captive deer is where this all started in my opinion, deer eating out of troughs mixing their saliva and nasal fluids by incidental contact.
I don’t recall as a kid any elder hunters( 1960’s ) discussing CWD .
It wasn’t until high density farms and man made feed came together , but that’s my opinion.

I think it’s a bad idea. I get they are trying to introduce CWD resistance into the population through genetic introduction. Thing is you are introducing the captive deer’s entire genome into the population which unknown consequences into the future. This could very well reduce the population fitness over generations. I think it would be better to reduce the population densities to reduce contact and help isolate some deer populations, quite the opposite of introducing new deer

My son is a wildlife biologist and I think he agrees that the 'farmed' deer is a HUGE problem.

Also in many areas the harvest is not high enough.

On the one hand, there are so many 'extended seasons' that are using things like 'modern' muzzleloaders that kind of defeat the 'primitive' intent, but on the other hand, the more people who we can get interested in hunting and outdoor conservation, the better.
