.450 Adams cartridge

Post by Scott Tschirhart »

I’ve always been fascinated with the .450 Adams cartridge and I think it’s nearly the perfect design for reloading a revolver quickly.

However I’ve never had any personal experience with it.

Has anyone played with this old cartridge?

Haven't played with it, but it looks a lot like what you would have when seating a 455 Webley bullet in a 45 Special case (45 acp case with a rim like a 45 colt case). Does look like a quick reload would be the end result just like you said.

Scott, the Adams and other old British cartridges and their handguns are fascinating. Here is Ground Zero for discussion of these arms.

october past we experimented with a supposed belgian bulldog though it is marked "british" There are no steps in the chambers and new unsized .44 colts, russians and specials fit easily in 4 of the five chambers. Just a bit of sizing at the mouth of a case makes them fit that stubborn chamber. I thought there might be issues with the thicker "american" dimensioned rim of modern cartridge cases but the cylinder rotates with only a hint of drag. There are timing issues and the cylinder has to be nudged manually just a bit for the bolt to settle in the cylinder notch.

A .454" ball rolls right through all five chambers. A .430" ball does not enter muzzle and goes down to its equator in the forcing cone and stops there.

We shot it scores of times, four-shots at a go with primer-only powered wax bullets and the tiny grip takes some getting used to. Your fuller webley/enfield grip will fit much better. I think I loaded some b.p. loads with .433" r.b. but on the porch where we were firing the wax slugs there was some decor glass in the background so we endeavoured to place bales of hay or straw between but never got it done.

As for the .450, translating the metre second data of the fiocchi .45 corto gives an optimistic 784 fps. ! That is with a listed 226 gr. lead round nose.

Billy.....er pardon Wilhelm, that link draws you right into the victorian/edwardian era anglophile dimensional portal/rabbit hole! Think of the unsuspecting folk who clicked that link and are now languishing in institutions, drooling and gibbering in either brash london cockney or lisping in posh, inbred manor-house r.p.

Worked for John Hinckley, though it made Jodie anxious.....

You must have posted that link before as I have been on there and went cross-eyed and lost all sense of time. Something like 3 1/2 hrs. in only the numb feet and full bladder rescued me. I think I need to keep a notepad and map just where I have already been. Easy to get turned around in there. Like going to one of these super-malls, too many choices.

Neither as too much b vitamins (yeast based) gives me the thrush. We prefer a more savory high-tea vs. a sickly sweet one so we occasionally smear anchovy paste on toast and pretend it is genuine bloater's paste. I'm far too colonial to hold the tea cup with the pinky out. I remember back when I was a wee lad and we'd watch an old flick with the likes of sanders or niven or similar and uncle leo would comment, "I bet them englishers have to squat when they pee !"

That forum is interesting. I was unaware of, and didn't know I needed a No.5 Army Express until now. Thanks enablers...

Being a southpaw I appreciate top breaks. But unless you reload shooting them is an expensive proposition.

For a long time you could find these, especially those in .38 caliber fairly cheap. Sadly not longer true.

I have been telling myself for years why I don't need a top break, again. Thanks for this.

This thread got me to feeling so bad about not having a top-break in the house that in order to lessen the sting, I ordered another Webley Mark VI CO2 pistol to replace the one I gave to my brother back home in Oregon. If any here aren't familiar with it, it looks, feels and operates like the original, and is made by Webley.
Here's a thread I posted over at Airgun Nation. Interesting comments about CO2 pistols vs. rattlesnakes.
