Deer stands and aging prostates…
.
Some of you know how it gets for guys as we get older, where the time between thinking, you might have to pee versus it actually, starting to happen, gets shorter and shorter. You can use a bottle I guess or take the gamble that you can get far enough from your tree stand do not make too much of a mark. But this guy seems to have found an even better solution….

On a more serious note, getting cold doesn't help that situation at all. Now I literally have to run to the bathroom every 15 minutes!
Re: Deer stands and aging prostates…
This would be funny if not so true!!
Re: Deer stands and aging prostates…
I can relate. Years ago I used to make fun of a co-worker whose restroom trips could be used to set a clock, then it happened to me...Karma I guess.

Is it bad that my tired eyes first read the title of this post incorrectly?

When i first saw the title and before i opened it , my initial thought was -- "Geez guys - carry a empty gallon jug with you - and keep it on another branch with some 550 cord until needed" -- as you dont want to contaminate the ground around your stand
There i go thinking like one of the poors -- its far more luxurious to hoist a latrine up there -- but could you at least hit it with some OD green to reduce the glare a bit?

Doug, at Sportsman's Warehouse we used to put up a deer stand and have a "Bladder Buddy" attached on a string. Of course this was all hilariously exotic in Oregon, where almost no one hunts from tree stands/platforms and baiting with anything -- even a handful of rotten apples, much less deer corn from a feeder -- will get you put in prison.

I use to carry a pee bottle, but I really think urine is urine for the most part. Every animal in the woods is peeing so a little human probably won't make much difference. I don't think I've ever been busted due to my pee being on the ground. I even pee in real and manmade scrapes and have watched deer work them without getting scared.

I have a buddy who is a really great guy. He hasn’t gotten his deer yet and it’s really bothering him. He hasn’t gotten been too busy helping his friends get their deer.
I am a little bit ashamed that I’ve been torturing him by sending him short videos of deer doing odd things with hunters. Last night I sent him one where a deer came up and sucked of theirs guy’s fingers.
I don’t use a pee bottle and I don’t think I have much trouble killing a deer anytime I want to.

Urine does have pheromones in it, which is why/how the bucks know to follow the dribbling females.JB wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2024 9:16 pm I use to carry a pee bottle, but I really think urine is urine for the most part. I've talked to old-timer hunters who used their wives' sanitary pads or tampons as deer attractants, and said they've seen deer actually 'check them out' when stuck or tied to branches of brush.
So I'd think that human urine might affect deer differently depending on the sex and age of the person...???
Another tactic I thought of when watching deer mill around a parked truck and combine all full of human smell and diesel (and no grain where they were parked), was . . .
...why not set up your deerstand, and all year long go back there and hang a bright shirt in it, pee there, maybe even leave a radio playing, and so on, so the deer get used to those things, and then when you actually go hunting there, nothing will be 'different' to spook the deer...???? I would think this would work well in populated areas, though perhaps not in remote areas where anything human is so unusual.

I've heard old timers say that, but have read several articles stating that there absolutely no way anything human menstrual related would affect deer anymore than the smell of something different like motor oil, Ivery Spring soap, etc. would. To me that make sense since you don't see bulls chasing does in heat, or horse trying to mate with female dogs in heat. But I guess we can't ask the deer for the actual answers

LOL a few years back we had a goat that took a very affectionate liking towards pretty much anything with four legs...regardless of 'assigned gender' or species ... that made the 'birds and bees' talk pretty interesting since the kids had all observed that behavior...JB wrote: ↑Tue Dec 10, 2024 9:35 pmI've heard old timers say that, but have read several articles stating that there absolutely no way anything human menstrual related would affect deer anymore than the smell of something different like motor oil, Ivery Spring soap, etc. would. Re: Deer stands and aging prostates…
Way back in the day, i cannot remember if it was black flag or raid but it was a cockroach spray in a red can that was very malodourous and could be detected with a normal human nose at a great distance. One whiff and the deer, mostly bucks, would come running and were angry about it allowing ample time for a shot before they kenned the human there. The normal spray can was used for spot applications here and there and the whole room fogger was used first before dawn to drench the immediate vicinity.....obviously care not to inhale the toxins was prudent.
I'm not saying it was as unsportsmanlike as shooting turtles in a bathtub but it was surprisingly easy. It wasn't an unqualified success for bowhunting as the buck would stay head-to, pawing the ground until he decided enough was enough but it was perfect for fowling pieces loaded with buckshots.
Then sometime in the early 2000's uncle made them change the formula. It became both less dangerous to bugs and far less provocative to deer.
