I had no intentions of getting anymore AR’s and today I bought one on Gunbroker all be it in one of my chosen cartridges the 260 REM .

Interesting, capable and forgotten cartridge. I had one of the Savage heavy-barreled "tactical" Model 10 bolt guns in .260 for use in our informal 600-yard varmint matches and ended up selling it to a kid who then proceeded to whip my glutes with it.
It is certainly as capable as the Swede and the gosh-darned Creedmoor.

I like the 260 but I'd prefer a bolt gun, just hate chasing brass from a semi!

Re: Went back down the rabbit hole !
I’ve got several 260 bolt guns . And had an AR-10 260 I built . I should be tuned into selling stuff but I saw this and got it cheap enough . Also I typically put a slightly cumbersome shell catcher on any AR platform guns I’m shooting at the bench or hunting . At present I only load Lapua brass for the 260 so I don’t wanna loose any . Did the same on the AR-10’s I had in 243 and 338 Federal as well as the AR-15’s in 6.5 Grendel , 450 Bushmaster and 6.8 SPC . Had a 10 upper in 308 but I was never worried about saving the 308 brass .

Actually I’ve had a 260 AR-10 before that was a 1/2 MOA gun . And I’ve had quite a few 260 bolt actions . Had a Savage 10 HB 260 with the target AccuTrigger I bought used . That gun was an honest 1/4 MOA gun but it shot no better than the Remington 700 5R HB 260 I have now . Had several Remington Model 7 stainless synthetic 260’s with the little whippy barrel that were under 3/4 MOA guns and I killed a veritable pile of deer with the first Model 7 260 I got back in 1996 .Bill in Oregon wrote: ↑Fri Nov 01, 2024 6:43 am Interesting, capable and forgotten cartridge. Finally got my hands on the AR-10 no thanks to the USPS dragging their darn feet . Gun came with a 30mm Warne mount but I have no 30mm tube scopes . So I swapped the 30mm mount for an Athlon 1” tube mount . Then I robbed the Athlon 4-16x off the Savage Hog Hunter 338 Federal (just might have to put that one on the auction block). After I got the scope mounted to suit me I tried a couple of the loads for my 260 bolt gun and they chambered which I took to be a minor miracle . Today I got it out and sighted it in . I’m okay but I’ve got the elevation cranked all the way up , so when I get a day I need to take the scope off and shim the back up a bit so as to get some turret adjustment back .

Re: Went back down the rabbit hole !
I’m no great fan of Athlon but since I soured to Leupold and the Silhoutte of their scopes got so blocky looking I’ve been using the Athlon’s . They’re a good bit less costly and try as I might I’ve never been able to destroy one from use on a gun . I’ve had a couple that cost me less than $100 brand new that I put on 375 H&H as well as 416 REM Mag . The darn things hold up without a doubt .

Re: Went back down the rabbit hole !
My load for the Remington 700 5R fluted HB 260 REM is the Hornady 129 SST pushed with IMR-4350 in a Lapua case set off by a CCI BR primer . In the bolt action that loads 1/4 MOA for five shots . It appears from what little I shot today that load in this AR is easily 3/4 MOA and likely closer to 1/2 MOA . I really see no reason to try anything else at this point .

I tried ARs for a while, I really like the look and feel of an A2 rifle. I sold the last one to fund a Marlin 1894c that I lost in a fire.
