I was running low on some of my .38/.357 bullets and since it was cool, windy and overcast I figured it would be a good time to catch up a bit. I used my Lyman 4-cavity #358665 mold ... a nice flat-nose bullet with a generous grease groove and a good crimp groove. Plus that nice flat meplat.
The bullets work well in everything I shoot them in including the Rossi levergun that Paco gave me.
.357 Magnums using 14.5 gr. 2400 lit by a small rifle primer
What I cast this afternoon ... box and all .... weighs nearly 17 pounds. I figure there's an honest 16 1/2 pounds of bullets which at 160 grains each would be a bit over 700 bullets. Not a bad afternoon and fairly easy with the 4-cavity mold.
Now all I have to do is size and lube them and they will be ready to load.

Re: Casting This Afternoon
I think casting on a rainy or blustery day, is one of the most relaxing, and satisfying things to do.

Re: Casting This Afternoon
I was just thinking that the weather had turned close to casting weather. Then today was warmer and more humid. But it is right around the corner!
Re: Casting This Afternoon
Looks good Jim. I just recently started casting again. I cast some about 15 or 20 years ago and never really got the hang of it. I have cast up some Lee 357-158 rnfp,
some, Lee Tumble lube 452-230TC and Lee 379-240 rnfp all 2 cavity molds. They are working good enough to learn how to cast, but I am thinking the next purchase may be a
4 or 6 cavity to speed things up some. I hope to shoot some 38 specials and 45 Colt tomorrow to see how well they do.

Nice, I've not tried that bullet yet. It sure looks good. Pretty good casting session. I can go about 2 hours before I start getting fatigued. Just about enough to empty a 20 pound pot if I add a few ingots during the session.

Yes, definitely keep at it. I've had a lot of frustrating days when I was learning and almost gave it up a couple of times. If things aren't going right, I add beeswax and stir for about 30 seconds, then I repeat it. If that doesn't fix it, I add a bit of tin. Almost always these 2 things solve my problems if my heat is already up to a good temperature.JBowen wrote: ↑Wed Oct 30, 2024 9:48 pm Looks good Jim. I just recently started casting again. +2! I started casing about 1976, mostly round balls for my muzzleloader round balls and have kept it up. A couple years ago I had to replace my old Lyman Mag 20 with the newer Mag 25. I have about 20 molds now. My most used is either the Saeco #316 for the .30-30, or the RCBS 45-225-CAV. I'd love to have a 4 cavity version of the RCBS. I have some work to do on my truck when I get home later today, and hope to get a day or two of casting in before I go back to work.LeverGunner wrote: ↑Thu Oct 31, 2024 12:12 amYes, definitely keep at it.
