I'm more than Happy to watch this kind of thing from a distance , My old shoulder hurts enough as it is. . Wouldn't it be a Good Idea to wait a bit on the round that didn't go off in case of a hang fire ?

My 'big thumpers' are:

500 S&W in a Big Horn Armory 89 carbine
375 Ruger in a Ruger Hawkeye Alaskan rifle
454 Casull in a Rossi 92 16" carbine
and
12 gauge shotshell in an Ithaca M-66 slug gun

Of the four, the shotgun is the one I dread enough to FLINCH when shooting. The other three I find 'brisk' or 'exhilarating', and you do kinda want to snug up to them before pulling the trigger, but thankfully I don't feel the need for anything more powerful. In fact the 'handiness' of the little Rossi makes it so FUN to shoot it's like you just don't notice the recoil.

In handguns, I'm much wimpier - I do like the thunderclap of letting go with heavy loads from a Ruger Super Blackhawk or Redhawk in 44 Mag, but I pretty much insist on Bisley grips on the former, and Pachmayrs on the latter. A 1911 is far less flinch-inducing, and I could shoot one all day long I think.

If given the opportunity, I honestly think I'd decline shooting a 500 Nitro or 460 Weatherby, although I think I'd go for a 416 Rigby or maybe a 458 Winchester Mag, assuming a normal weight rifle.

I did shoot a cut-down-to-barely-legal 10 gauge breakopen, and the owner had shortened the stock to just above legal and in the process removed the buttstock weight. It was the longer 10 gauge magnum shells too. It felt like someone slugged me in the shoulder with a baseball bat... The guy who owned it was big and tough and burly - the kind of dude who HAS to have the biggest Harley cuz the smaller bikes won't hold up - so for him it was 'pleasant' to shoot. Not me...!

The hardest kicking long gun I ever fired was a friend's Mossberg 7 lb 12 ga turkey gun firing 3 1/2" magnum rounds. One shot did it for me....done.

I had a steven 10 ga break action that the original owner had removed the stock weight from. The stock had a crack in it from it's recoil. I killed a deer and a few turkeys with it.

one time I shot every available 10ga turkey load in it to see which one patterend the best. OUCH! I had a giant bruise in my upper arm/shoulder.



I have now have a winchester model 71 .348 and have everything to load with Barnes 250s and H4350 it but haven't yet. I'm nervous about shooting it since you guys have been recently talking about how brutal the recoil is.

I don’t find the recoil of a Winchester 71 to be troublesome at all.

I find the stock to be very comfortable.

I’d also like the 10g single break above with the Turkey!

My biggest thumper these days is a .450 Nitro 3 1/4”.
Uses a lighter load specially for these rifles by Cogswell and Harrison - 440gr with 65gr cordite for 2000fps instead of the regular .450 load of 480gr bullet and 70gr cordite.

I dunno, for many years I deer hunted with an 870 and good ol Remington sluggers. Then an 1100, both 12 ga. Then a Benelli , a Marlin 512 somewhere as well and back to the 870. The Marlin was brutal! After I ported the barrel it was tolerable. Finally it dawned on my recoil addled brain to go to 20ga. The 3" Remington acutips kill deer better than the old foster type slugs I believe.
Lots of slugs will induce a flinch.
My 10ga has been hunted with once, recoil isn't that bad but at 10lbs empty I don't cherish dragging it around.
I shot an old 8 bore years ago, the guy that owned it neglected to tell me it was prone to doubling, I hadn't thought about loading 1 to test fire...

I've been reading Samuel Baker's books again recently. That looks like a rifle he'd have enjoyed! He considered the 10 gauge to be at the starting end of an African rifle battery and seemed to gravitate more to the 4 bore and of course had "Baby", his 2 bore, which he confessed to rarely using. An 8 bore pinfire is an intriguing rifle indeed. I'd be interested in firing one shot, just to say I had. I wonder what this one weighs. It looks lighter than I'd want in a rifle that powerful.
