Shortages would really have two causes.
One, reduced production due to the insistence of fools on not using known methods to maximize yields. Read that as insistence on “organic” farming. Organic farming has never been sufficient to feed an entire population.
Two, continuing to ship food out of this country while facing potential shortages. We should be stockpiling the things we can rather than sell it overseas.
People need to relearn the lesson that one must take care of their own first. Then and only then can they care for the rest of the world. If we do face shortages and folks go hungry this lesson will be learned quickly.

OK, that was kinda snarky. But I think that if anyone has not done this, that today is a good day to get some buckets with airtight lids, and some rice, and some beans, garbanzos are good, and your next favorite, to total a hundred pounds of rice and a hundred pounds of beans. more if you've many mouths to feed. along with squirrels and chickens and eggs "in season", you can sustain yourself indefinitely.
