Looking for Target Grips for my S&W 66-2

Post by JOG »

I'm looking to buy a decent pair of S&W Target or combat grips for my 1982 S&W model 66-2 revolver.
It wears Hogue Monogrips for now. The Magna's seem to be too thin for my large hands.
The model 66 is a K frame square butt model.
Thank you, Johnny,
Here she is looking unhappy wearing rubbers!

Not S&W branded.
These came off my 65-2, K-frame Square butt.

$50 shipped and insured.

Hey Johnny. I have a 66-1 just a few years older than yours. One of my favorite Smiths. Like you, mine came with service stocks, which I don't care for. Hogues are great for shooting, but uglify a beautiful revolver.
Another great factory option, buy pricey, are the Smith square butt "combat" grips with the finger grooves. I scored a set for mine and like them a lot.

Hey OldWin, I totally agree with you! The Hogues feels good, but there ugly! I see lots of nice hardwood finger grove grips on Ebay.
They all seem to be made in Thailand. Apparently, it takes a few months to arrive after putting in an order!
I guess I wouldn't mind the wait if I'm not going to get ripped off!
A brand-new pair of hardwood finger grove grips made in Thailand are $50 to $55.00.
Or a beat-up pair of 1980s Smith target grips are $150.00!
Happy New Year!

Happy New Year buddy.
The factory finger grooves are even more. Stupid money!
I have had good luck with Altamont. They make a lot of grips for S&W. You can get them with medallions too. I have a couple sets if you'd like pics. They run around 60 bucks I think.

Thanks OldWin,
If you have time to post a photo, that would be great!
I'll check out Altamont today to see what they have.
Ebay has lots of stuff, all seem so pricey!
I hope all is well up north!

All good up here buddy. Thank you.

Ok. My Altamont examples are round butt, but it will give you an idea of how they look. A set on my 2.5" model 19 and on my super cool 3" unfluted 629 with the endurance package (only 2500 made).
The model 66 and the 6" 629 have factory Smith square butt combats for reference.

Thank you buddy. I have been happy with the Altamont grips I've bought. I've heard of some with not the best fit, but that hasn't been my experience at least. I figured it's worth the chance for the price. I could always return them.

I've got a few Altamont grips...on 1911s to Redhawks to J-frames.....

No complaints on any of them. And reasonably priced

It appears that every set of K frame square stocks are temporary out of stock.

I'll take a look in my stash in the cellar later -- as I may still have a factory original set of S&W K Frame Combat Grips from a model 16 32 Magnum.

More to come later...

I would sell you this set of smooth targets (sometimes called Presentations) for $200.
Hard to say how much figure they have but still in the un-opened package.

Real nice-looking grips!
They are round butt; my S&W 66 is square butt.
I greatly appreciate you digging thru you stuff for me!

I'll order something from one of the custom grip makers.
Or possibly Ebay, Thank you,
