Great post. Every time I see heavy, dangerous African game taken with the .45-70 I smile. A levergun being the launching platform makes it that much sweeter. It is especially nice since the so called experts who debunked this idea just a few short years ago are eating crow. I guess these guys forgot the lessons the old buff. hunters taught us so long ago. Way to go sir. Pleased. 1886.

Those buffs are scary looking dead. I don't know if I could handle hunting one.

Well done indeed. I love my Co-Pilot and I see that yours is a bit more traveled than mine. Tell us more about the hunts, distance of shots, where you shot the animals, how many times, where you hunted, performance of the bullets. You know, we need the facts man, the facts!!! :D :D Very nicely done.

Nice try, reflex264, but no cigar. Your rifle doesn't have "magnum" written on it so we all know you just sneaked up to a sleeping beast and had your picture taken with it. Shame on you!

Just kidding. Those are fine trophies that you harvested. Thanks for sharing the pictures!

Nicely done! How about a few gory details? :) Like shot placement, number of rounds to take them down, etc...

The reason that the 45-70 leverguns got a bad rap is that too many "less than well informed" hunters stoked them with 300 grain remchester factory loads. Well, needless to say they got poor performance.

The Garret loads and similar are very much like the old original nitro loads that the Brits hunted with at the turn of the century - successfuly. They used hardened solid lead bullets.

History revisited.

Thanks for posting the pics!

Great post...
I get so upset when people still claim the 45-70 is a poor killer of game because of its slow velocity

Excellent. Obviously you and the ole 45-70 did your jobs. Buff and Hippo, two of the most dangerous critters walking around. Can't wait to hear the stories.

That's really something! Well done. Wonder how much jerky you'll get off that "water horse"? :) Yes, please, hunt details when you have the time to post...

I had to look twice before I started doing back flips in my living room. At first I thought that you had shot my ex and her mother :o .

Very nice trophy's, I would like to hear all of the details of the hunt.

Yea, I would like to know more also. Was that the 540 gr hammerhead? Where were the buff taken? Tell us more about the shots. What distance? Were they one shot kills? I presume you got complete penetration? There are 2 different rifles in the pics.
