Hurricane Prep

Post by Rimfire McNutjob »

Well, here it comes. The track has it plowing through my neck of the woods. I went to check the generator and it wouldn't turn over ... just clicked. Panic set in as I recalled the reason I have one of these stationary generators ... air-conditioning leading to a happy marriage. Lack of a comfortable environment makes for a very upset wife as I found out in 2003 during those hurricanes and long power outages.

I was lucky to find a new battery about 2 miles away ... weird 29NF model.

Pulled the side panel off and swapped the battery out. Hot and muggy today so I managed to sweat up a storm doing it. Turned her over and she fired up but made some odd sounds on the way ... spit some fur and blood out as well. Turns out, a possum had taken up residence in the radiator shroud. I'll have to fish the remains out tomorrow if it's not pouring down rain. Should be super fun.

Good luck with the storm!

We're having a backup generator installed next week. Been waiting for 5 months for the thing to arrive from the supplier. Power goes out here constantly, finally convinced Bubbles that we need one. :D

That poor ol possum was just trying to find a dry place to weather the storm!

Years back one of the hurricanes that caused us real flooding up here flooded the lumber yard where I was working. About 4 days after we all started getting flea bites when standing by the Coke machine. Come to find out 3 baby possums were able to crawl up the chute of the machine. They got stuck and died, the fleas were pouring out of the machine looking for a warm meal!

Good luck with the storm.

Good thing You tried it out ahead of time.! most people around here have some kind of a Generator as the power can go out , sometimes for no apparent reason. We had a tree fall on the power line across the street one stormy night. pouring rain and the light show from the electricity had the tree on fire in the rain before the line parted. one of many times a generator saved Me a lot of work. Be Safe.

I always try to have 3 weeks foodstores on hand, grab bags ready( bug out bags as they are called these days), yard cleaned up of debris, anything else tied down and equipment serviced. Now possums cleared out of generators- I will have to add to the list Rimfire :)

Good luck!

Generators make life SO much nicer after a big blow.

We lost power for 11 days after the Ice Storm of '98.

Got a generator about halfway through - BIG improvement! :-)

I’m quite jealous of folks that live in hurricane country. Tornado, flood and blizzard as well. These things give up to several days warning.

Out here we deal with fire which can, if you aren’t in immediate area where it started, also can give a bit of warning. Unfortunately, earthquakes give no warning.

As to generators, it amazes me that they need a specific battery. Pretty much any battery of appropriate voltage and enough amps will start them. Funny how folks think you need the exact battery.

As an example, my neighbors truck battery was dead. I ask why hed didn’t just yank his boat battery and start the truck the drive to the auto shop.

His response was it’s a marine battery and can’t be used on land. Some people would be dead without help to breathe in and out.

Biden said the most IMPORTANT thing to do in preparing for a hurricane is "get vaccinated"...

https://youtu.be/CUCTK4-lV-U

We got an auto-start generator installed.....except for the propane.....several years ago, but we got into the post-Obamacare death-spiral for primary care, and never got enough ahead financially to justify the hookup. PLUS, everyone I talked to just wanted to bury a flexible copper line six inches or so from tank to generator, and I tend to drive in the yard with my truck or tractor, and might even forget and drop the tiller there someday. So I asked if it couldn't be buried deeper, and if the area passing the septic tank feed couldn't be in conduit in case someone digging for the lid 'missed', and just got "...we follow the code...". Reminds me of why I always want to do things myself..... "the code" is usually reasonable, but after all, is a MINIMUM standard. Contractors obsess with it because failing to meet it gets them in trouble, but exceeding it means not being able to offer the lowest bid. But sometimes "code" is wrong. I did the septic feed to my house myself, and used Schedule 80 when code at that time allowed Schedule 20, which they used next door. Nobody drove on theirs, yet it all collapsed; I drove a big 50 ft lift over mine and it is fine.

So.... someday I need to hook up propane; otherwise we have a useless generator probably rusting away and becoming unuseable.. :?

As for batteries - I have a 'marine' one in my pickup truck (that sits for up to a couple months before firewood trips or lumberyard trips), on the advice of a guy at the battery shop. Seems to fire up more reliably now (before it would need a jump after a long sit, even with a new battery) - maybe it works for me because sometimes our driveway floods, so that counts as being used "in the water"...

It seems like for hurricanes, just a) build on high enough ground that the floods won't mess with you, b) build your home with engineering capable of handling high winds (it can be done), and c) have water, food, and fuel/electricity on hand. Friends of ours in hurricane areas have still had beautiful yards and gardens messed up, and so on, but with those three things taken care of it can go ok. What we get is tornados - no warning, and although it isn't too difficult to use something like the Reward Wall system and a properly designed roof system to make a house 'survive' a tornado in terms of protecting the occupants, a direct hit will still shatter windows (unless you have really good and functional shutters) and rip off siding and so on.

Yeah, I'm not quite as bad as the guy with the marine battery, but my battery is a super tight fit so I try to get the one it was designed for ... otherwise I probably couldn't close the door panel. So it's a physical dimension for me, not an electrical thing. It's sort of oddly tall and slim. My generator uses a 2.5L Ford inline 4 cylinder ... like the ones they put in millions of Ford Escorts back in the day so just about any battery would crank it.

Fitting the battery into the space available is a potential issue. I have a couple of generators, and after Texas' Snowpocalypse a couple of years ago, generators are now available everywhere.

LIttle engine like that, I'm surprised no one has figured out how to retrofit a crank start.

Power came back for me late on Friday evening. I had one large pine tree branch fall into the fire pit which my chainsaw will dismember so I can burn it in place. Otherwise, just fine. The lake is up about 3 feet though.

Did you lose anything or get any of the flooding?

OH YEAH
We got hammered.

Check out the pics on the other hurricane post.

Stay alert and safe during the cleanup. I am sure that downed trees can roll unexpectedly, and that wildlife is to be found in unexpected places.
